Sam, when using the NVidia codec or for that matter any other codecs, did you notice choppy video output? If you had a smooth live tv and/or playback, what are the specs of your system?? my Athlonxp 3000+ isn't making the cut as the CPU usage is ~100% when using the Nvdia codec or the default codec, I would like to know what minimum upgrade I may need to do to get smooth playback with whatever codec I chose to use..

What is your video card? And how much ram do you have? That CPU can handle HD.

Playback is smooth. I'm running an Intel P4 at 3.2GHz with 2GB ram, but the machine is also doing tons of other stuff too (i.e., there are normally over 20 icons just in the system tray area).

When I use the NVDIA video decoder, my CPU is around 30% to SageTV.exe during playback of a HDHR recording. If I switch to the InterVideo decoder, the cpu for SageTV.exe jumps to over 70%, but it is still smooth for me. I use VMR9 as the video renderer.

I am running with the Nvdia video decoder, and had been using their audio decoder too until it didn't work (on my system anyway) with the HDHR recordings.

I was merely posting that fact for the benefit of others, if they got one of these (highly recommmeded!) units and at first think audio does not work. I have no idea why it doesn't work, but for the audio I don't think I care since I can still run the Nvdia video decoder.

It's not the HDHomeRun's fault. The regular Nvidia audio decoder can't do multichannel decoding.

Are all channels choppy/stuttering? I have a problem with 1080i channels only, 720p works perfect. Are you using Sage 5 or 6? I rolled back to 5 and the problem was improved quite a bit. Going from 6 back to 5, my CPU usage went waaaay down, from 60-70+ down to under 20 or lower. I'm not sure why 6 is so CPU intensive. I also turned write caching off on the recording drive which helped as well.

Also, none of this has anything to do with the HDHR as I can get smooth playback with VLC.

It's odd that some have what would seem to be very similar systems, yet get such varying results.

One of my clients is very, very choppy on HDTV under v6, totally unwatchable and definitely pegging the CPU. Also not specific to the HDHR, BTW, b/c the same problem occurs with MyHD recordings.

It was fine under v5. Something is definitely wrong with v6's rendering. it seems like the Sage demux is under heavy change. I just hope they get it fixed!

If I'm not mistaken, 6 is still in beta so there is certainly a chance it will improve. It does seem odd though that there is so much difference, and even differences with different setups.

I wasn't meaing to imply there was anything wrong with the HDHR - the audio is definately present in the recording. I didn't know the exact cause though. So what you are saying is the HD broadcasts also include more audio channels too and I just never realized the limits of the nvidia audio decoder?

I cant for the life of me get the HDHomeRun to be recognized by Sage. I'm running ver 5 and have followed all the directions but when I restart Sage, it never detects the new tuner. I have the utility downloaded and running in the background with both tuners configured and "enabled". I go through the Tuner setup and it only detects the one I'm currently using, not the HDHomeRun. Any suggestions?

Btw, it works great using VLC.

Make sure Sage and the Sage service if you are using it are completely closed/exited when you enable the tuners via the HDHomeRun Sage util.

Is your sage installed at C:\Program Files\SageTV or some other directory? You should have a couple of log files like 10101158-0.log and 10101158-1.log. Do they have any warnings or errors? Did you enable your tuners for QAM or Antenna in the HDHR Manager?

From what I understand, the HDHR app is supposed to start when Sage starts as it's in the SageTV directory, although, I'm not sure that's actually happening.

I put the HDHR app in my Startup folder and it's worked like a champ ever since.

The HDHR app places the entries for it's encoders in mmc/encoder. This will be in sage.properties. These need to be shut down before right clicking the setup box in the HDHR GUI. You can also delete ALL encoder info in these files and start from a clean slate if you're still having problems. This will also remove your analog capture cards, requiring a re-setup. Full erasure needs to done if you switch from OTA to QAM, or vice-versa. The sage_hdhomerun app will not start from the Sage folder, it needs to be added to a startup location: HKLM/Run, HKCU/Run, Startup Common, or Startup User.

Edited, Thanks Tox.

Actually it should only place entries in the Sage.properties regardless of the mode you run in. Sageclient.properties is only for the properties related to the gui/client side of the Sage app.

NF2 mb, 3000+ CPU, 1g ram,ATI AIW2006

was using intervideo codecs for lowest CPU usage ~15 -20%
using anything other than intervideo or overlay codec would ~100% CPU and that includes VRM9

Currently using NVidia PureVideo codecs, VRM9 and the CPU usage is at 40-50% I'll stick with this setup

How do you subscribed to locked threads over in Silicondust? It says if you want email notifications of updates to the Sage software, to subscribe to the thread. But I can't determine how you do that.

BTW, my install is already problematic.

1. I thought I'd brought home two 8" coax cables.

2. I thought I had a splitter from the cable company. Turns out it was a grounding block.

All I've done is open the box, and I'm already having problems!

(Actually, it's a big problem because the major issue is time to do this, and the best time was this morning.)

You can't. jafa/Nick keeps tight control over threads over. As far as update notification, he should probably email list to who ever is subscribed to the forum as you can't subscribe to the notification thread itself.

At the bottom of the page, below the "New Topic" button, it shoud say "Watch this topic for replies" (if you are logged in to the forum). If you click on that you should get an email when he adds another posting.

Yes, but there's been nothing posted in the MCE Beta Forum, hence no "watch this topic..."

I think he is interested in the sage software instead of MCE.
