Just finished installing version 2.0c, everythings working without any problems!
The new options in the perl2dvdsetup really help out with the install process now. Also thanks for the advanced.pref option "Use specified work folder for all processing" allthough at first i tried just setting it to "1" silly me.... D:\dvdwork works much better!

One last thing i figure i might as well point out.. the perl2dvd.pref option "Work folder =" never seems to have any files in it.. it is not required anymore? all my qdvd files (.log .work etc..) end up in the specifed "Path to store mutlifile dvdlist's=" and all other files being processed are in my "specified work folder for all processing". Once the burn is complete the only file left is the qdvd.log file and dvdlist.log.

Hey EP, I am not sure how evil you are, but I could use some help here.

First, I would recommend changing your installation directions a bit to a few steps first. Those steps being installing Nielm's dynamic menus and then your other program import. Following these instructions through seemed a bit, well, bassackwards.

Second, I think I finally figured out how to set the whole thing up. The STV seems to be working properly. DirMon is finding the programs and is kicking off the program/script, but I am unable to get past this. I set it up last night, picked a viedo to burn to DVD and went to bed. This morning when I took a look the PC had a pop up error of "low virtual memory error" and DirMon was still processing ... 8 hours later.

I rebooted and here I sit.

Attached are the log files. Hopefully you can point me to something to try?

Thanks,
Malbec

Bad DVD

I tried to burn my very first DVD with your DVD Burning tools. I have to say the interface is wonderful... If this would work flawlessly, it would be such a painkiller!!

Anyway, I got all the steps working until the ImgBurn... ImgBurn worked (I think), the DVD plays but after 2 sec of the show blam it closes on all the DVD player programs I tried. Something must have gone wrong in the process... How can I find more details?

The file I tried to burn is a simple mpg file recorded by sagetv.

Thanks

Erik.

@CadErik

Wow, I’ve never heard of one of my DVD’s actually crashing programs before. Have you tried playing the DVD on a standalone DVD player? Also, what DVD decoder are you using?

Can you elaborate on what install about the install steps was confusing?

Oh they are not crashing the programs! After the 2 seconds of the show play it goes back to the root menu.
I tried playing it with Nero showtime and also VLC. I did not try with a standalone DVD player but I pretty much expect the same :-(

Oh, I understand now... so the menu's work fine, but when you play the actual show the DVD plays for a few second and then pops you back into the menu?

Can you find the qdvd.log file for that DVD, append .txt to the end, and post it here for me to read?

Ok one theory, is that I run out of place on my drive. Would there be any chance to set that differently and have the working folder on another drive? The drive where all the sage recordings always overflows and Sage is in charge of deleting old recordings.

Thanks,

Erik.

Nothing was confusing, just seemed a bit out of order. I got a bit down the track and then had to take a step back to find and install Dynamic menus, etc.

You could easily chalk it up to me being more anal retentive than the average bear.

Regardless, the directions aren't as bothersome as me not being able to get this to work. Do you have any tips there?

1) I see the short cuts getting created in C:\sageothers just fine
2) I see the dvdlist, dvd log, qdvd file and work file getting created in c:\program files\dagetv\sagetv\qdevd folder just fine
3) After 3 days of processing I managed to find some files in o:\sagetv\"name of file" that looked like transcoded mpg files.

So, a few questions
a) What should I expect for a time expectation between selecting a program to burn to DVD in Sage to actually getting the DVD burned? I went three days and then just canceled everything as there was a nice backlog of none of my recently recorded shows were getting the commercials scanned.
b) I tried a few different versions of mencoder, but they all seem to crash - I have an Atholon XP 2100+ for a processor.
d) In layman terms can you walk me through the general process? You select the file/fiels to burn in sage. A file gets created in qdvd folder. DirMon2 sees the qdvd file exists with no work file. Dirmon kicks off perl2dvd as a result. Perl2dvd does what exactly? Transcodes the file to a DVD format? Kicks off imgburn to create an ISO and then burn it? Some where my process is going awry. I can smell that I am pretty close to success, but...

Thanks!

Yep, that's exactly what's happening. I usually have my sage drives set to keep 20 gig free for just such a reason, but for people who don't want to do that there's also an option to specify an alternate work folder in the advanced.pref file. You can either re-run the perl2dvdsetup.exe and when it asks you if you want to use a centralized work folder (or alternate work folder... I can't remember) say yes and then pick the folder you want to use or you can just open up your perl2dvd.advanced.pref file and add the path in yourself to the centralized work folder preference.

3-days... ummm that's a little long. Do me a favor and post the qdvd.log file that was generated and i'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

Hey evilpenguin,

Sorry for the delay, but I was out, then tried everything from scratch and kicked it off again. I got further this time, however I ran into an ffmpeg error - the MS debug log is attached in case that helps. MS error summary is as follows:

szAppName : ffmpeg.exe szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : ffmpeg.exe
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 000122c2

In my Other Programs in Sage the file shows up with a DVD icon instead of a yellow or blue dot making it appear as though it was burned to a DVD (it was not).

There is a *.img file in the directory where the .mpg file is located. It is about 1/3 the size of the .mpg file. I will play around with this after this post.

The log files are attached as well in case that helps.

Any tips on what I might be missing? Thanks again for all of your help and creating this. If I can get this to work, this will be awesome!

EDIT:
Okay, I am sorry. I did not realize that all I needed to do was click on the icon in Other Programs to burn the DVD. Doing that, the entire process worked. So, if you would be so kind, would you be able to offer me a few tips on the following:

1) Any idea on the ffmpeg error I received?
2) While the process worked, the resulting DVD did not. The video was very choppy and the audio was very, very out of sync. I assume this can be addressed via some encoding settings? I followed the links on this thread, but to be honest, I don't know enough about this stuff, so... I can say that compression is not a high priority of mine at the moment, so if there is a quick setting change there?

Thanks again for all of your hard work on this. It is much appreciated!

What recording profile are you using?

Sorry, but I am not exactly sure what you mean by recording profile. The recording quality on the program I tried was MPEG2 Max Quality - it was a recording of the news that did a story on something related to the family, so I bumped the quality on this one to the max. All of my other recordings are on DVD Standard Play. Should I try one of those? If this is not what you mean by reocording profilem please let me know...

Ahh, that's the problem. The DVD standard only allows a max of about 9800 kbs and your recording is upwards of 12,000 kbs. Ideally I should catch that and transcode it down to a lower bitrate, which I'll make sure to do in the next version. You're other recordings in DVD standard play should work just fine.

Thumbs up

12/05/06 v2.0d -
  • Bugfix: Fixed an issue where a file overwrite warning was hanging the process
  • Bugfix: Fixed some lazy code when looking for the preference file
  • Bugfix: Removed some unnecessary file deletes
  • Bugfix: If video bitrate is to high, force it to transcoded
  • Bugfix: Estimated encode size is now more accurate
  • Bugfix: Detect if DVD image is unexpectedly small
  • Bugfix: Fixed thumbnail generation
  • Bugfix: Deleting logfile wasn’t working properly
  • Bugfix: dvdList.log is overwritten instead of appended to prevent it from getting too big
  • Enhancement: Added easy mutlti video DVD creation and improved easy single video DVD creation. See included example batch files for details.
  • Enhancement: In case of error, all relevant batch files will be zipped and placed next to the .qdvd file. This way, when you have a problem, just post the zip file on the forum.
  • Enhancement: Added profile option to specify an output folder for compressed videos. When you use this the originals will not be deleted
  • Enhancement: Added option to specify qdvd folder in perl2dvdsetup

Exclamation v2.0d download isn't correct

The download section isn't letting me upload my new file for some reason. I'll try and sort this out tomorrow.

Update: It appears to be working now. Just check to make sure your download includes "multi_video_dvd_example.bat". If so, then you got the right one.

The download section is giving me nothing but trouble. I've been trying to upload a quick fix to 2.0d all morning and it keeps timing out on me. I'm gonna have to start looking for my own file storage because this is getting very frustrating
