Remote Desktop Issue

I have SageTV (5) setup to sleep/wake to/from the task bar when ever I enter & leave the sageTV 'activity' on my remote.

Expecting that when it is sleeping in the tray I can remote desktop to the machine from work and have access to a non-filtered web browser & maintain some software services on the Sage box that do work for my ReplayTVs etc...

Yet when I connect to the SageTV box via RDP (within the LAN as a test) I get a full black screen. Not the desktop. What gives.

I read the thread VNC vs. Remote Desktop and I can manage the 'locking' of the console after I quit my remote session. No on e in that thread really mentioned this problem.

I'm pretty sure I have Sage set to NOT use FSE mode. But I'll have to double check that tonight.

If you have 3D acceleration enabled in Sage, the Sage window will be all black when you RDP in from another machine. RDP can't intercept direct writes to the graphics hardware. Only software-based rendering can be remoted. So if you need to use RDP to administer your Sage machine, turn off 3D acceleration.

I use VNC, but of course it does not duplicate the contents of windows or screen areas that contain video that is written directly to hardware. So VNC works fine for me - as I don't need FSE. SageTV is normally the only app on that PC and it uses the entire 800 x 600 screen via it's menu choice to do so. Thus, what I see in VNC are the Sage Menus (and MS Windows desktop if I drop back to that via Sage's menu choice. I sometimes change Sage to a small window while I use VNC to fiddle with that distant computer; it's a laptop closed up behind the TV.

RDP has the issue of taking over the login and disrupting it on exit. Yuck.

I tried the hack to RDP to permit a 2nd to the nth login with an independent desktop - like X-windows has always done. Microsoft disables this so it can prohibit multi-user GUIs on Windows. The hack sort of works, but it is crashey.

If you're using RDP, I would suggest checking out the add on which allows for multiple logons. It replaces the termserv.dll file with one from a beta which allowed for multiple logons. Great for leaving the viewing screen alone while still allowing you to be able to admin the box.

I saw that in the thread I mentioned and was plan B.

Plan A was to use the little script / .bat snippet that someone psted that takes the console back to the way it was before the RDP login.

Plan C is ultra VNC.

I agree with bcJenkins -- I have the multi-session RDP setup, and it works like a charm. I can connect in while SageTV is playing, check out the ComSkip status, transfer files, and even kill the SageTV client on those rare occasions when it stops responding.

Be advised, the old tsconsole trick doesn't work on Vista 'as is'. UltraVNC works fine.
