I'm still not getting the second MAC and IP address to stick. I've typed it in several times and each time I restart and look at the sage.properties files only the first MAC and IP address are present. Here's my miniserver/clients line:

miniserver/clients=MVP/00\:0f\:22\:00\:03\:71/192.168.1.47;MVP/00\:0f\:22\:00\:04\:5e/192.168.1.48

would you mind taking a look at this and telling if I have the syntax correct?

Thanx.

And you have stopped the SageTV service? (Brought the SageTV Control app and chose Stop) Or sent SafeTV into standby to the system tray, right-clicked on the icon and chose exit?

yes, I have Sage running as a service and before I make changes to the props file I right click on the green icon in the tray and exit and then I go into task manager and close SageTVService. I also saved the changes each time I made them and restarted Sage.

its probably something really dumb that I'm overlooking...I'm stumped. I've typed in that line probably 15 times. Since superporky got it working, I was hoping he could check my miniservers line against his and tell me what I need to do to get it to work.

Your miniserver line looks good to me. Here's mine
miniserver/clients=MVP/00\:0f\:22\:00\:05\:39/192.168.0.6;MVP/00\:0f\:22\:00\:03\8/192.168.0.7

Here's a shot in the dark....try is stopping the Sage service either with the Sagetvservice.exe thing or from computer management/services (start->run->compmgmt.msc). Stopping it from task manager should do the same thing but who knows. When I changed my settings I had not yet, setup Sage to run as a service.

just out of curiosity, is the file named sage.properties or is it just sage? Through my own screw up several weeks ago I think I re-named the original file from "sage" to "sage.properties" so now I have two. I don't know if it's causing my problem but I don't think I need them both. Which is the correct?

Sage.properties although there also is a sage.jar.

Yes, you should stop the service via SageTVServiceControl.exe or Windows' services.msc. If you just kill the service via task manager, it may just get restarted automatically by Windows.

And, make sure you are editing sage.properties -- be sure file extensions are not hidden or else you may end up editing/creating sage.properties.properties... or something like that.

I finally got it to work! Apparently, as Andy mentioned, simply using task mgr to stop the process doesn't work. A sage user and friend of mine said to go into computer mgmt, service, and right click Sage to stop it there (My Computer, right click on Manage). I retyped the miniservers line (I have both MACs and IPs memorized now ) and restarted the server and the line is there and second extender fired up!

Now I need to see if my pedestrian PIII PC will support two extenders at the same time.

Thanx again!

thanks to all who contributed to this thread as it helped me quickly get my new helius up and running.

Here's my ?:

I have a wrtp54g (linksys router, built-in vonage), and I cannot see any way to set the helius on a static ip. It seems like the only way to do that is if there is a way to do it on the helius itself, like you would on a pc. I don;t think I can flash wrt or anything like that on this router due to it being locked to vonage. Any ideas how I can avoide having my helius quit when the router inevitably reassigns it?

thanks

I quit using an older linksys router over a year ago so I don't remember if it allows for fixed leases or to assign static IP address from the router. I use an open source router (IPCOP) that allows you to assign an internal IP address to a MAC address and it calls it a fixed lease. It is like a static IP assignment but I assign it from the router rather than from the device itself (helius MVP). I too, doubt that you can flash the helius device since the only thing you're probably seeing when you plug it in is the orange screen.

Check about fixed IPs or static leases w/ the Linksys router users' manual.

The other thing to consider is that even if you're using DHCP and letting the router assign the IP address, it is unlikely to change so you can edit your sage.properties file w/ the dynamic address and probably not have to worry about it. The nice thing about the fixed or static IP is that you're guaranteed to have the same IP. Unless you have a lot of devices / computers on your network, and each device is getting a different dynamic IP address each time it connects to your router, you probably will have the same dynamic address assigned by your router to your extender each time your plug in your extender.

This has been my experience w/ the devices I have assigned via DHCP.

Helius MediaMVP not working

I just got 4 of the Helius MediaMVPs and can't get past the orange Helius screen.

I have enabled SageTV Server, and Media Center and Placeshifter Server on the Detailed Setup/Server screen (DetailedSetup-Server.jpg).

I have also included this line in the Sage.properties file:

miniserver/clients=MVP/00\:0f\:22\:00\:02\:4b/10.10.15.12

The mac address of the MVP is 00:0f:22:00:02:4b. It's IP address is 10.10.15.12 (I have a DHCP lease reservation set on my router). I can ping 10.10.15.12 just fine.

The firewall on the Sage-TV machine is completely turned off.

When I start Sage-TV plug the MVP in, it just stays at the orange "Helius" screen. Oh, and yes, I have added the Media Extender license to the SageTV server.

I am having the same problem on all 4 MVPs.

Any ideas?

Is there anyway you can increase the length of the lease that the router assigns to the Helius extenders? It won't fix the problem but it might shorten the frequency in which the router assigns new IPs and lengthen the duration of each dynamically assigned IP address. If the lease time is now 72 hours, for example, maybe you can change it 720 hours so the extender could connect to the router for a longer period of time before you had to edit the sage properties file w/ the newly assigned IP. Just thinking some more about this question...

Just an idea, I don't know if the firmware fully supports such an IP address scheme. Yes, I know that 10.x.x.x is a valid non-routable IP range. IIRC there was some problems with a user using a 172.16-32.x.x range. The MVP may not support usage on 10.x.x.x. I'd test it on a 192.168.x.x network if I could.

The main problem I was having was getting the edited sage properties file to 'stick'. if you restart the sage server, is the properties file in the same syntax as you typed it? check it. I had to shut down the service completely (see previous posts in this thread) before the edited sage properties file would save.

ke6guj's recommendation is a good one too.

I hope that's not it, because...Oh, what a pain that would be to reconfigure my entire network! Right now I am in the process of installing Vista Service Pack 1 RC. I am trying to convince myself that that will take care of it. Crossing my fingers.

Yes, the properties are "sticking". I made sure I closed SageTV and stopped the service any time I made changes. Thanks for the suggestion.

This may sound stupid but have you let it sit at the orange helius screen for a while? I was impatient as it seemed to take an eternity for the unit to load and the Sage screen to come up. After playing around with the sage.properties for a couple of hours waiting 2 mins seemed like 20.

I noticed the same thing; even now, when starting up, it takes long enough for me to think 'oh no, there's a problem' and then it finally changes to the Sage screen.
