I suspect they just replaced it with a tested unit. If I get the chance I might have a look, but I'm a little hesitant to mess with it since it is working.

Aloha,
Mike

If I were you, I wouldn't either.

Well, I sent my bad box in for RMA yesterday so I expect it back sometime middle to end of next week. I'll gladly pop open the returned box and snap some pictures. Does anyone have any pictures of a "bad" box that we could compare with?

Also-- on the box that they returned to you, is it a different serial number or did they return you the same box (and possibly make a modification that fixed it)?

Sorry, I didn't write down the serial number before I sent it out.

However, they received the bad unit on Monday and I received the replacement on Wednesday via UPS 2nd day air. That leads me to believe that they just immediately sent out a replacement upon receipt of the bad unit. It also is an indication of some pretty darn good customer service.

Aloha,
Mike

I know there are a lot of frustrated folks who got the bad HD-PVRs, but I really think Hauppauge is trying to do right. Nice to see...

I didn't ask and they didn't offer. It isn't a big deal to me as it cost about $16 to ship via priority mail with $300 insurance.

Aloha,
Mike

Unrelated to this topic, I would concur. I called Hauppauge today for an RMA on a HVR-1600 card. After the tech asked me if I could put the card into an XP box for testing (I run in Linux) I politely explained that as the owner of:
  • 3 HVR-1600s
  • 2 PVR-500s
  • 1 HVR-1800
  • 1 HD-PVR
  • 4 MVPs
He politely issued my RMA without further ado.

I was pleased with the transaction

I ordered a second HD PVR a few days ago and just got the following message: "Due to overwhelming demand, we are backordered on this product until early July." It looks like the queue is getting longer as they deal with the issue of returns.

<sigh> I'm an overheater too...only a few seconds of video before nothing. All disks stop, TS files aren't changing, just a red light.

I've got choppy video to boot, but I think that's likely related to something else I'll have to figure out once I get a working unit. For the record, I'm a 2108 build week on stock drivers.

Sounds like it's a hardware issue, though...per the post above mine.

Priority mail, that's USPS right? UPS wants to charge me $50 + to ship ground from AZ.

Eek! Those are the kind of shipping costs I'm used to seeing. Yes, priority mail is USPS. There is no tracking, but there is delivery confirmation available.

Aloha,
Mike

Got my RMA unit today. It's sitting on it's side as a precaution but seems to work fine. Not as sharp as my r5000-HD, to be expected. It is a 2008 variant.

When I get my replacement unit back next week I plan on being as un-careful with it as possible. Maybe I'll lock it up in my cabinet and make sure it can perform well in a warm cabinet without screwing up. I don't want to have to deal with any reliability issues down the road =)

By the way.. I asked the RMA guy (via email) about any official position Hauppauge has on this issue and he said that engineering keeps a tight lid on these things and that there has not been any official statement. This is in contrast to the information posted by shs (linked a few posts above).

Does the overheating HDPVRS components out not work. I cant get anything going with arcsoft's capture software. It does however capture from my hdhomerun fine.

I thought maybe my directv box wasnt pumping out the component signal so I hooked my tv up to the component out of the hdpvr. nothing....

I then took the component into the HDPVR connected to TV and I got a picture.

IF you have an overheating HDPVR should I expect a signal on the component out?

Can you get it to work by leaving it sit cold for a while (maybe half an hour?) and then powering it up and trying to capture with the ArcSoft software? If the faulty unit has been left on for longer than about 5-10 minutes it likely will freeze very quickly if you attempt to capture on the component inputs. At least that was my experience.

I have never seen it working in the archsoft software. However I have the components in a closet downstairs and my pc is upstairs. I guess it could be locking up as I walk up the stairs.

what about the componets out, I assume they die if the unit overheats?

no the components are just a pass through. mine worked even though the unit did not want to record at all.
