One final note. I took the offending CD-RW and installed it in an old 1997 vintage PII 200MHz running windows 98 and it works just fine.

just out of curiousity, was it a cable-select vs what the device was set to issue. If your motherboard is using cable select and the device is set to master but is plugged in as a slave, you will have problems.

It was not CS or Master/slave issue. I tried CS, MS and Slave. I did not resolve the issue, there is still a problem with the combination of loaded win XP, motherboard and the samsung CD-RW. I resolved it by swaping with another CD-ROM I had (the CD-RW works just fine in the other computer). Note, however, the same combination of hardware: motherboard and offending CD-RW, booted and loaded win XP from the Windows XP home CD. go figure!
