Did you try mounting the remote hard drive and just playing the file in Windows media player? If you get stutters, then something's not right with your wireless setup. (I think 802.11g downgrades to 802.11b when there are 802.11b clients or networks in the area. It could be your neighbor's fault. )

The best way I know of testing your actual throughput is to copy a file from one computer to another while watching the Windows Task Manager "Networking" tab. This will tell you what your maximum throughput is as well as how much of the pipe you are filling. You should expect to see 54Mbps as your link speed and 35% for network utilization. If the network utilization is going all over the place (going from 0 to 35% and not smooth), you may have interferance on your network. It is recommended to set your router to use channel 11 as the your first priority. Channel 6 is second and channel 1 should be used as a last resort. Channel 1 is very close to the Microwave Oven frequency and will drop your bandwidth down to 0 every time someone cooks popcorn or a baked potato. Stuttering is usually caused by 1> Lack of CPU power to decode the video or 2> Lack of bandwidth to feed the decoder. Regards, Mark Last edited by mandrews44; 04-26-2004 at 01:03 AM. |
