Fuzzy, what did you end up ordering? I've given up on my ZBox, thinking i3 is the way to go. Thanks!

I consider moving to PCs all the time for extra flexibility but I would be interested in hearing how you built a 9-watt-using, fanless i3 system that requires no maintenance for $180?

Are you using 'client' interchangeably with 'HTPC'? in other words your budget i3 is a HTPC with Sage installed on it.

I was using client in the sage definition (SageTVClient.exe). Yes, it uses more than 9W. Yes it will likely have a fan on it. No, those things don't bother me (it sleeps when not in use, and will be in a closet, so noise is negligible). I, however, WILL be able to play back all my media, with sound, no matter what the format is. ;-) (y'know, like my old MediaMVP can.. and the HD100/200 cannot)

I am going to give windown standard 7 embedded an try with it (part time - when I have time to mess with it) and see how it performs network booting off the server. I'm guessing I'll have to up the RAM, but that will depend on how many features i have to put in to make it work with sage.

With network booting are you anticipating not needing a hard drive at all?

I won't be prancing anywhere thank you very much.

As for the DTS (non-HD) support discussion, I thought this was a licensing, not a technical issue. In other words, I don't think a HD300 is tied to any potential fix.

If SageTV goes with something like the Sigma 8655 chip for the HD300 (like used in the AVerLife ExtremeVision Media Player) the support for HD audio passthru and downmix should be there on the chip from the get go.

Here's a link to a page with detailed specs (down screen a bit) for the AverLife:

Yes, with gPXE, you can mount a iSCSI volume at boot-up, so your 'harddrive' is actually on the server. Since the sage client uses so little actual local harddrive access once loaded, performance should be relatively unaffected.

the only downside, really, is initial boot-up time, and that it might have problems if the server goes down (but the client's useless at that point anyways).

Yes, I believe the reason they stated for why they don't include it in the hardware itself is a licensing issue.. however, the open-source transcoder they use DOES support DTS, hence me still getting sound from BD rips in Placeshifter and the MediaMVP.

Something interesting I just noticed with my e-mails to orders@sagetv.com

My e-mail:
George,
Please let me know when more HD-200's arrive. Also, have you heard if there is any work on a HD-300?

Thank you.

The response:
Unfortunately I don't know have any information on the HD300.

George

This really is just how you look at the wording, but the way George stated it, it would seem to me that there is indeed a HD-300, but he either didn't have or isn't able to provide any details about it.

Fuzzy, I’d be curious to know what combination of hardware you ended up getting to build your i3 client. I’ve been thinking about building one too.

I went super cheap with it. (well, as cheap as i could go and stay mini-ITX):
ECS H55H-I LGA 1156 Intel H55 HDMI Mini ITX Intel Motherboard
hec Black 0.7mm Thickness SECC (Japanese Steel Metal) 8K 8K01BBA12 Mini-ITX Desktop
Intel Core i3-530 Clarkdale 2.93GHz 4MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 73W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80616I3530
Crucial 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model CT2KIT12864BA1339

Though I can't reasonably recommend it yet, as i won't receive the bulk of the parts until tomorrow, and then some build time.

Honestly, it probably would have been cheaper to go with an AMD system, but i figured some day i'll get an HD reciever, and want passthrough.

Especally if you are including a Sage client license and a Windows license since those two eat up about 2/3 of the 180.

Yeah, in my case, I've got both of those laying around

Initial boot-up time of a diskless PC couldn't be any slower than the HD200 which takes 5-10 minutes from power on to being usable.

Wow, my HD200 only takes 17.3 seconds, I just timed it, from power on to being at the main sage menu. That is with telling the extender to autoconnect now when the option came up.

None of my HD200s take near that long. From pressing the power button on the remote to Sage's main menu took 14 seconds just now.
