More research:

AM2+ motherboard can run AM3 CPU, so I can re-use my existing DDR2 RAM. I have $350 gift card to Tiger Direct. Brings cost down to about $500 out of pocket. Looking better.

Now, only question --
Athlon II x2 X255 Regor @3.1GHz and 65W for $75
vs
Athlon II x3 X440 Rana @3.0 GHz and 95W for $75
vs
Athlon II x4 X635 Propus @ 2.9GHz and 95W for $99
vs
Phenom II x4 945 Deneb @ 3.0GHz and 95W for $140

All are listed as tested good by MSI for the MSI mobo I chose.

I assume the WD Blue are for your RAID OS and 4 WD Black 1TB are for your recordings.

Why not go with 2 x 2TB drives.

HITACHI Deskstar H3IK20003272SP (0S02861) 2TB 7200 RPM Free Shipping
$109.99 with promor code EMCYWNT35 (ends 9/1)
plus $20 MIR
brings this to $89.99 each.

2x90=180 4x80=320 Save $140

I run mine with Athlon II x2 X245 Regor without issue.
I do Comskip but no transcoding.

Lightbulb NIC Efficiency

Inefficient use of a NIC may actually be related to the information found here:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...96&postcount=5

Possible adjustments are also mentioned. Worked wonders for me. No need to buy a dedicated NIC card for me, but my motherboard has 2 integrated GBE and I use both of them in 802.3AD (LACP).
