Take an HD200 on the road

You need to forward the new port to the IP of the sage server. You kept saying you forwarded it to the port. When I configure on my router I define a service name (I call it SageTV) I define a start port and an end port (31099 for both) and then the server IP address (192.xxx.xxx.x) Are you sure you are configuring port forwarding or are you changing something else?

It doesn't matter what forwarding or non forwarding i do, I can make this problem more clear:

No matter what i set the sage software port to, when i click test in the sage software, my router gets a request from the outside to port 31099.

Am i wrong to expect the test to attempt to come in over the different port?

I had to dig this up from long, long time ago. Change the reference of 443 to whatever port you choose to use.

from Opus: For manual port forwarding: You can't simply forward port 443 to the server PC. When you configure a custom port (443), you are configuring the _external_ port that will be forwarded to port 31099 on the server PC. There is a property that can be set to change the 31099 value (search the property file), but if you have an MVP, it will no longer be able to connect to SageTV.

If your router cannot be set to manually forward external port 443 to 31099 at the server PC's IP address, then yes, you have to use UPnP... and follow up on that bug report

Are you trying to manually forward the port on your router or are you letting SageTV do it via UPnP? The "Configure Placeshifter Internet Connection" menu should show you what SageTV thinks is the current config when the top button (Configure Placeshifter Connection) is in focus.

The Test options works with a custom external port number, provided you have everything configured correctly.


Gerry: I don't know where that came from or how old it is, so that may be out of date. As long as you are configuring the external port, it should work fine both on your LAN and for external connections.

i *am* forwarding external [new port] to internal 31099. What's more, this is far from the only forward i have on my router. SSH, HTTP, HTTPS, all running off my computers, none of which are on the standard ports. All of it works fine.

I hate UPNP. I don't like software deciding what ports to open. I have it disabled on my router. (and sage knows not to use upnp)

Once again:

No matter what i set sage to, default or new, my router gets a connection attempt on 31099 when i hit test.

I don't know how to be more clear about this. I must be crazy.
If i tell sage I want to use 12345 as my new port, and then i click test, my router sees a connection from the outside going to 31099.
Unless I'm insane, I should be seeing a connection from the outside to 12345. no?

Try this: Set up your router to use the external port you want to forward. Run through the PS connection options in SageTV one more time. Go away for a while & test in half an hour. Maybe SageTV isn't updating the locator ID info immediately & thus the test isn't working right after making your changes.

And, check sage.properties to see if placeshifter_port_forward_extern_port has been set to the number you want to use.

After setting the new port and waiting for awhile to test, it worked just fine.

So there appears to be a settings change delay, at least with respect to changing ones placeshifter port.

I have a need (or maybe a desire) to place an HD200 (or if I have to buy an HD300 it's not a big deal) on the far end of a long (backhaul grade, not typical residential stuff) wireless Ethernet bridge connection. The bandwidth fluctuates between 3-5 mbps.

I'm working on increasing the bandwidth for other reasons too, but what is the best way to get something like this to work well. Can I compress the recordings to some TBD format that will work better on slower links? Can this be done on the fly, without hurting the quality of the picture on the wired HDx00s?

Any tips would be appreciated.

So along with the bandwidth question, another, sillier question i can't seem to find an answer to anywhere:

When i take my HD200 out somewhere, how does it find my server?
Do i have to put in the server location code somewhere, or is that saved on the unit? If i do have to enter it, where and in what mode do i put it?

can't seem to find this in a manual anywhere....

That's on pages 5-6 in the HD200 manual. You'll need your server's Locator ID or web address.
