The HDHomeRun records the exact stream sent by the broadcaster. Sounds like you are recording the SD version from your cable company. (it's entirely possible that they only carry an SD version in the clear - they are required to carry the locals unencrypted, not the HD Versions unencrypted). If you DO end up using an antenna, most LA broadcasts are full HD (1080i or 720p) at about 15-18Mbps 6-8GB/hour.

Is it only around 1 GB / hour because you mentioned that cable resamples where OTA will have much larger files and great quality video? If so, I personally would prefer the QAM because my family never erases anything.

Then don't complain that you aren't getting HD. FWIW, from 40 miles away, I get everything available on mount wilson, with a $24 antenna on my chimney.

Wait a sec...I'm not complaining at all. I'm simply asking a question because I want to be sure I have everything set up right.

On another note - I'm curious as to how many stations you get from Mt. Wilson because I just may get an antenna?

One more thing I was wondering was whether the HD antennas will work on both an HD Home Run (which clearly they will) as well as an analog tuner card? Or do the antennas only work on the HD tuners?

Thanks,
Mike

There's no such thing as an 'HD Antenna'. All that matters is VHF, and/or UHF. For LA, you do need to get both (technically, you only need VHF-Hi (7-13) and UHF (14-69), AS VHF-Lo(2-6) is no longer provisioned for television broadcast. As for the channels I receive from here in Riverside:

(Everything here except KVCR is from Mt Wilson, and should be available pretty much anywhere in the LA basin, some places with set-top style rabit ears.

I did notice a quality setting in the sage properties for the HD Home Run but I"m assuming that is ignored. I don't understand how it could only average around a gig an hour for two shows I checked. I have Time Warner.

Any thoughts?

Depends on the source. 1GB per hour sounds about right for a 480i recording. You might check the file with MediaInfo to see what you actually have and to check the resolution and such.
