Converting Sage recordings to MKV and...

Greetings,

I'm looking for ideas/options to transcode many of my SageTV recorded (MPEG) videos into more space friendly H.264 MKV's. Obviously Sage has it's own conversion tool built in, but test runs gave me grief (*anomalies with the audio). So, I'd like to copy some files off and transcode them on my desktop PC where I know it'll work.

Degree of difficulty: I'd like to put the files BACK so that the SageTV database still sees them as a recording - metadata, comskip, their place in the "Recorded TV" area vs. "Videos"... etc. etc.

If I keep the file name the same (except for the file extension), delete the old original and copy in the new encoded one, will Sage be smart enough to see the file name is the same and carry on as if nothing happened? Or, will Sage see that show-123.mpg no longer exists and delete the database entry?

Before I started copying files off and encoding them, I thought I'd ask!

-Greg

If you keep the names the same and the dates on the files the same it should work. I believe that is how someone was automating the process using SJQ and a conversion program (Handbrake maybe?).
