Glitchy Playback

I'm getting strange glitchy playback when I watch recorded shows (haven't experienced on live yet). I've tried switching video decoders, turning overlay on/off, changed audio decoders, used maldude, malore and original skins, can't figure out what it is. Specs are below. Any thoughts?

P4 2.4G hyperthreading enabled, 800FSB
1GB 3200 SDRAM
Windows XP Home on main drive
120GB video drive
Hauppauge PVR250
Creative Audigy 2 ZS
Tried standard hauppauge decoder, Non CSS intervideo, elecard, VMR9, etc.
Quality setting is 2GB

One guess: Is your video partition using 64K clusters? If not, have you defragged lately? Small clusters & fragmentation can cause problems trying to read the data fast enough for smooth playback.

Oh yeah, video directory is 64k, I defrag every couple of days (based on the "analyze" function which says it needs it). But last night I checked it again and it said no defragmentation was necessary, but glitches still happened. And, if I let the video run with the glitches, it eventually freezes up and I have to kill the app. I haven't done that in several days, though, and I can't remember if it's a client freeze or a windows freeze. I'm almost positive I can close out the app and restart without a reboot.

I think I recall seeing someone having a similar problem. He turned off hyperthreading in the BIOS and it seems to help.

Maybe that will work for you also?

I would think that turning off Hyper-threading would compound the problem. I only saw studdering once I had disabled HT. I was then able to get rid of the studdering by raising the SageTV priority to above normal.

Yeah, I definitely think disabling it would make it worse, since hyperthreading by defnition is designed to streamline higher priorities over lower ones.

another possibility is using vMR9
try using overlay although the menu will not be color transparent
the picture quality should be much sharper
Also I personally like NVDVD and Sonic
pm me if you want help with NVDVD!!!

I've tried VMR9 and Overlay both (typically use Overlay as default), neither makes a difference. I've tried Sonic decoders, makes no difference. Haven't tried NVDVD but my guess is that this isn't decoder related (since I've tried so many different ones with the same result). Any other thoughts?

Well I definitely see a difference in picture quality when switching between renders even more so than decoders sometimes
what video card are you using and at what resolution?
you know to enable 3d acceleration in order fro VMR9 to work

Using ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB, set at 1024 x 768. I've tried with 3D turned on and off both, no difference, but performance is generally better with 3D off (and not using VMR9).

So I didnt know to format my drive to 64k clusters, is it worth wiping out my machine and rebuilding it with them? I occasionally get a stutter but not that often.

I would actually suggest getting a second drive for just Sage storage. You can then format that with 64k clusters.

Unfortunatly I am running an EPIA M10000 in a mini-itx case with a 350, so space and heat are at their limits. I dont have a problem re-building the machine if you think that is the right thing todo...

There are utilities that can do a non-destructive reformat/repartition of existing partitions, such as Partition Magic. Other people have mentioned another one, but I can't remember the name of it at the moment, since I use PM.

You could split the partition allocation sizes however you want, as long as you leave enough for your system drive, of course -- so that part is entirely up to you. For the rest of it, I would use NTFS with 64K blocks. (It is an up-to-date version of PM, right?)

I would make sure to turn off the recycle bin on the new partition, or at least turn it off for mpg files.

You change where the files are stored at Startup -> Detailed Setup -> General -> Video Directories. However, note that changing the dir will not move the files & you can't move the files either. I would add a new dir, set the old one to some low "Use Only" limit so hopefully it won't get used any more & then once you have watched/deleted all the shows so it is empty, remove it from the list.

why did you say to turn off the recycle bin? and why can't you move the files to the other partition temporarily?
