Recording log?

Just had occasion today to try to figure out what the LAST thing recorded was to check for problems (something happened on the cable and I want to see if it effected any recordings that may have been happening at the time).

Is there any kind of recording log or other way to find out what has recorded when?

You can just go to the recordings screen and sort or group by date.

I use the Malone menus and have one of the views configured this way.

I just look in the recording directory on my server, sorted by date.

This is something that SageTV has never really done well. Over a decade ago I used MCE and BeyondTV and they had an easily accessible recording log that would show what was recorded and what was not due to conflcits, reception problems, etc. I think SageTV stores this but it is in the main log and it is like finding a needle in a haystack.

It’s really not that hard. Just go to the recordings screen and set it to sort by date. You can do this with the plane vanilla Sage interface, or with the Malore menus. I don’t use Gemstone, but I would be shocked if Gemstone could not do this too.

That will let you see what was recorded. If Sage encounters a problem and fails to record something, it logs it as a system message and gives you an indicator at the top of the main menu.

The only thing you don’t get is a log of what was deleted. So, if you recorded something but deleted it without watching, you wouldn’t have a clear record of it that you could see within Sage. In this case you’re right you would have to search through the log files which are very long and cryptic (and get overwritten frequently).

I do have my menus in Gemstone sorted by most recent recordings.

But I am not sure this gives you a log of why something wasn't recorded due to a conflict or a tuner failure or somethings similar.

The method suggested also only help if you still have the recording.

I'm sure at some point in the earlier days of Sage there was a way to go back and see your recording/viewing history even after the recordings were deleted. Not sure if that is still available.

There is a separate viewing history screen in Sage - this is one of the Malore menus. It does show everything you’ve ever watched, even if the files have been deleted.

And you are correct, as I mentioned there is no log of deleted files.

There is also no log of conflicts, but Sage does warn you beforehand when there is a conflict, and the System Messages screen does log any errors encountered during a recording (such as if a tuner doesn’t respond or goes offline).

For the OP’s issue, checking the Sage System Messages would tell you if Sage knew it had a problem. Then sorting recordings by date would let you find the most recent recordings so you could play them back and make sure they were OK. I think that would take care of his particular situation.

The one area where it would not help is if his capture device went offline completely well before the recordings were scheduled And there weren’t enough working tuners available to record everything in the schedule. In that case, Sage would have reported recording conflicts BEFOREHAND, and would not have even tried to record something, so no errors would be logged. Then after the recording time was passed, the conflict would have just gone away with nothing logged.

So, I can definitely think of cases where additional logging would be useful, but in this case I think the OP should be able to get what he needs.
