Do the clients and servers check their version numbers?!

I have 2 OS installs on the one machine.. one for general use, and another suposedly clean install for my home theatre use on my projector... my client in the clean install had NOT been updated.. not knowing this i ran it and it just sat there decompressing the database or whatever.. I started to wonder if it was updated and eventually killed it and installed the RC... then everything was fine...

I assumed they would do this already but if not, on the handshaking between client and server.. they should check they are the same versions and if not exit early with a nice

"client too old, update to version xx.xx"
