View Full Version : Updating DVBS frequency files automatically

I've been more and more disappointed by the fact that broadcasters are frequently changing their DVBS parameters without notice and as a consequence to miss recordings.

On a standard STB like the SkyBox the lineups are changed automatically OTA, but what about us with tuner cards?

So I came up with the idea to write a SageTV plugin that will be able to fetch data from well regarded websites like "KingOfSat" and automatically update your existing .frq files minimizing the risk of missing recordings ;)

Sounds good?

Well, I'm in the specification phase of the project so this is your chance to provide your suggestions if you wish.

Thanks

Unfortunately on the 1st November 2012 another big lot of frequency changes has effected the UK freesat lovers!

On a bright side, I'm currently testing the HTML scaper I've written which takes the data from "KingOfSat" website and is working pretty well...so keep watching...

Few weeks and hopefully missing recordings will be a thing of the past ;)

I've been pondering the exact same issue, just discovered this post.

I have put together a very rough and ready process that sends an Email daily showing the changes.
Take a look at

Also looking to take it further to create the Lineup in Stephane's XML Importer automatically.

That's interesting, but I was thinking to something rather simpler. Basically the plugin will read your ".lnb" files and will automatically create/update the relevant ".frq" files as appropriate, then it will periodically look for changes and will update your ".frq" files under the hood.

The data source is the "KingOfSat" website.

The project is looking very promising indeed, as I said before, I've just completed the HTML parsing whereby I'm generating all the required information for SageTV and working on the integration to a proper plugin. I hope to have it done before Christmas as I'm kind of very busy at work and spare time very limited, but I will get there.

I was wondering whether there is potential interest on using this plugin outside Europe or not. I realised that the "KingOfSat" website provides very up-to-date and accurate data for European satellites only whereas "LyngSat" includes Asia and Americas as well, but the data are not updated so frequently and in more than one occasion I did find errors in the database.

Please let me know your thoughts as the "LyngSat" website is completely different to parse and don't want to mantain both, if you see what I mean.

take a look at DVBE4Sage, for some providers it is able to extract the lineups OTA and to export them for Sage. It is worth to try.

I'm looking for someone willing to provide some feedback about the future "DVB Satellite Importer" plugin I'm working on.

I made a java executable that by reading all your current LNB and FRQ files will cross-reference the data with the "KingOfSat" website and will produce a new FRQ files (don't worry the original are left intact) which will have the same channel number and order, but with the up to date parameters.

The cross reference is done by channel name matching which is case sensitive and must be the same as the channel name listed in the "KingOfSat" website. My suggestion is to give it a go first, then if you notice that some of the channels in the new FRQ files are not present is just because the channel name in the original FRQ file is not the same as listed in the "KingOfSat" website, so the only thing that you have to do is to change the channel name accordingly (don't worry SageTV completely ignores that text) and re-run the software.

This beta testing is very important to understand whether the engine is working properly and caters for different tuners configuration, but don't worry, the software doesn't interfere/change anything on your current SageTV setup. The "KingOfSat" website is providing data for European satellites only and, at the moment, the software should work with any East of South satellite position, the West of South satellite position are currently not supported.

If you're willing to help, please send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a copy of the executable along with the simple instructions.

Many thanks

Regarding the beta testing, I just wanted to add that the software is only supporting tuners used with SageTV natively, so all network encoder solutions (DVB4Sage, DVBLogic, etc...) are currently not supported.

routerunner, I realised that sage does not need all the parameters in the .frq file to tune. For example if you add a channel manually all you need to enter in the physical channel field in the following format as:-
onid-tsid-sid-channelnumber
for example BBC1 one would be
2-2045-6301-101

So you could default the rest of the information in the frq file ( or if you could update the channels directly we would not need the frq file at all.

You could also then epg collector as a source for this information as it provides it all. This would also mean that you could get the updates quicker than from scraping the website.

ps. on a similar subject I have made progress in that I now have a c# program taking the epg collector file and creating a lineup for XMLTV importer so that the channels get updated automatically overnight.
I could get it to produce an frq file for you?

Very good finding indeed. It may work for DVB-T as well knowing which parameters it needs. But what about the frequency value? Are you saying that sage gets this OTA? Some parameters ar vital to lock on the transponder, unless sage uses the above parameters to connect to web service somewhere that returns the remining info? If I recall BBC1 is one of the channel defined in the "Predefined.FRQ" have you tried with another channel like "The Vault"?

So you could default the rest of the information in the frq file ( or if you could update the channels directly we would not need the frq file at all.

Unless it stores this in the properties file or in the wiz.bin, I don't know how you coud do it without the FRQ file.

Well, if you can manage to get the FRQ, job is done, but I don't know the integration with XMLTV Importer (Stephane's?), can you please eleborate a bit more what is the relation with the importer? Does it cross reference the channels information in the EPG with the lineup?

On a side note, I've just started the SageTV 7 plugin integration, which I hope to complete pretty soon. Overrall I'm pleased with the result, is simple, fast and hopefully will make missing recordings a thing of the past...

Yes you'll need to put the transponder frequencies in the predefined.frq file before the {auto} section and this would work better for DVB-T as these frequencies are limited (although I have not tried DVB-T is should work ).

How are you planning to get guide data other than now and next into Sage?

With XMLTV Importer I define a lineup here you can specify the Physical channel number as per sage. Can provide more detail if you want but, basically I link the SID which is also the xml guide data channel reference in EPG collector so it will automaticall link the Channel to the guide data.

If you need some help, I'm willing to do some testing for you.

- I have three lineups in XMLTV Importer (DigiGuide (UK), mc2xml (Italy), mc2xml (Italy/France/Germany)).

- Channel mapping is one to one with FRQ as we like to have the multilanguage channels ordered in groups.

- I have 8 DVBS tuners (2 x TBS 6984 Quad), 4 dedicated UK, 3 dedicated Italy, 1 in DiSEqC switching for Italy, France, Germany.

One question how do you set the region correctly ? Ie I want a lineup for London ( Crystal Palace ).

You need to set the channel name (after the :#) in the original .FRQ the same as it appears in the KingOfSat website, that's it.

I have a request

Can you not match the king of sat frq with Digiguide channel number?

I have worked out how to do this but my Java skills need more work. I have also worked out a way to then add the channel to DVBLogic and XMLTV. So you would not have to manually change anything if a channel has changed or has been added. Oh and it also changes channel logos.

Yes. But it will then also add the information into XMLTV. So all you would need to do in DigiGuide is add a channel or channels and they automatically appear in sage. I also use DVBLogic and they get added into there complete with channel number. If anyone has used DVBLogic then they will know how much a pain it is to add a channel.

When you say XMLTV are you referring to the XMLTV importer from Stephane? Because if so you can do the same today by linking the existing FRQ to the XMLTV lineup and my importer it will keep up to date. So the workflow will be the following:

- Add channels in DigiGuide.
- Add the new channels in the XMLTV importer lineup.
- Link the FRQ file to the XMLTV importer lineup.

This way the new channel will appear in the next EPG update, and my plugin will keep the new channel update.

If is not the case, then you need to:

- Add channels in DigiGuide.
- Somehow the channels will be imported in the EPG.
- My plugin must cross reference the name (Station or Description) in the EPG to generate the information back in the .FRQ.

This approach could be feasible, but creates restriction on the channel name choice...

Well sort of. Each channel in DigiGuide has a ref number. All you have to do is match the channel with the ref number. There is a folder in DigiGuide with all the channel logos named with the ref number. It's just a case of renaming the ref number with the channel name then copying it into the sage folder.

Only problem is the logos sizes are not that good.

What I have done is created a folder and renamed the channel logos I have for sage and renamed them to the ref number used in DigiGuide. Then when you add a channel it renames the ref number to the channel name. So you use your own logos.

Like I said before this is all theory.

My plan was to have some sort of look up table. This would match the king of sat channel name with the DigiGuide channel name. Then have a third channel name which would be what is displayed in Sage. You could then replace Plus 1 with +1 etc. This name would then be used to populate the name in XMLTV and change the channel logo name at the same time. So there would be no more manually changing channel names and logos

Hope that makes sense

Yes I mean Stephane's XMLTV importer, but have you got to manually add the channel into XMLTV or are you editing the lineup.xml file?

Dean

When I need to add a new channel I do this:

- Manually add the channel in DigiGuide.
- Manually add the channel in the XMLTV importer correspondent lineup.
- Run the EPG update.
- SageTV shows the new channel.
- Add the new channel entry in the FRQ file (but this, I guess, can be done automatically by linking the FRQ file in the importer's "Channel Lineups -> Frq Files drop down list").

When I need to remove a channel, unfortunately the XMLTV doesn't allow you to remove a channel from a lineup, o better I haven't figured out how to do it, so I manually change the lineup.xml to remote the entry.

In every case I believe you cannot skip the XMLTV step as you need a way to insert the new channel in the EPG then I can figure out a way to add the entry in the FRQ file, but then you have name choice limitation.

Talking about the logo, is a feature I plan to add via the LyngLogo website which have hi-res station logos, if the logo names doesn't match the name in the King Of Sat, then an idea could be to add the different names in the FRQ file via comma separated names like:

CH:xxxx ............ :#Channel Name, Logo Name

In every case any solution must be as simple as possible.

So to summarise, what you want to achieve is:

- Add/remove a channel in the DigiGuide a channel.
- Run the Birtle's grabber that read the DigiGuide lineup and creates the XMLTV.xml
- Run some software that automatically read the XMLTV.xml and add/remove the channel in the lineup.xml setting physical channel number the same as logical.
- Run the XMLTV importer that automatically will populate the EPG along with the new channel.
- Run my plugin that using the new information in the EPG will add/remove the physical channel tuning information in the FRQ and will download the channel station logo.
- Run another software that will take the information in the FRQ and will generate the tuning information for DVBlogic.

Missed something?

My idea is simpler I think. And I have proved most of it works.

1. Add channel in DigiGuide. (You can then change channel numbers and names)

2 . Check DigiGuide to find out what channels are configured. (This bit I can't work out yet as I don't know where it stores your set up/configuration)

3. Use DigiGuide data to pull down the King Of Sat data.

4. Use some sort of look table/file that would match channel names. At this point you can then configure the name that would appear in Sage. As the King of Sat name does not match the DigiGuide name and sometimes none of them are good for sage.

5. From the data from Digiguide write the lineup.xml with your sage channel name and channel number(at this point you don't need to run Birtle's grabber (I use DG2xml. Think that's what it called) From what I have seen the xml ID is the channel number.

6. Then pull down channel logos and rename to the look up table/file with the sage name. This will match the lineup.xml file.

7. At this point create your frq file for sage or create DVBLogic Frqs.

8. Then wait till XMLTV importer runs Birtle's grabber and then imports everything.

That last part could take a day to work.

So all I would have to do to add or remove a channel in sage is add or remove it in digiguide.

We/you. (Saying you cause I'm still learning jave lol.). Could then may be look at step 8. Because why do you need to pull down all the data from digiguide and run the XMLTV importer for every channel. Why can you make it only work just for one channel if you make a change? Would speed up adding / Removing channels into sage on the fly.

Hope that as clear as mud lol

Hi,

I don't use DVBe4Sage, I did try it for a while but my machine runs 24/7 and DVBe4Sage usually crashed (on my system) after a couple of days plus the softcams (ACAMD etc) where not stable enough (maybe because I use Windows 7 64 bit, who knows). I appreciate that DVBe4Sage is a great program it just didn't work for me, I assume the people who have stable DVBe4Sage setups either don't use the same OS, hardware or they don't run their systems 24/7.

Instead I use native tuners which are 4 x Anysee E7 S2's with 4 Diablo WiFi Cams (the Diablo WiFi cams connect to a OSCAM server program running on the same PC).

The setup works well but I do have to keep manually updating the frq file every so often. Out of interest I thought that DVBe4Sage already updated its own frequency data?

For EPG data I use DigiGuide with DG2XML via XMLTV Importer. The XMLTV Importer updates every other day and initiates the DG2XML, these all work well. For information I use the channel numbers from DigiGuide/Sky TV. I set up a wiki page a while ago http://sagetv.wikia.com/wiki/SageTV_and_Home_Theatre_PC_Software from time to time I put copies of the most up to date .frq files that I am using.

If this plugin was able to automatically update the native SageTV .frq files then that would be really fantastic.

Let me know if I can help or if it is possible.

Thanks,

David

If you have the overwrite FRQ option set to false (which I strongly recommend) the new FRQ file will have the file extension ".frq.new", so please look for that file in the folder.

Eddy,

I had another go but no luck with updating the .frq file, I tried the following:-

1) Added a channel into Digiguide (502 Bloomberg) well actually it was already selected within DigiGuide but I wasn't using it in XMLTV importer or within SageTV.
2) Updated XMLTV Importer Channel Line up to include the 502 Bloomberg channel into the line up
3) Added the following "CH:502 sat:0 #:Bloomberg" into the .frq file for the first of the Anysee tuners
4) Updated the XMLTV Importer (ie pressed the Update Guide Data) and waited for it to update
3) Forced an EPG update in SageTV (using the Webserver option)
4) Open the DVB-S Importer plugin, went to the configuration and changed the setting to overwrite FRQ option - false
5) Pressed the UPDATE button.
6) Waited a while

Nothing updated and no frq.new files.

For information the new channel does now appear within my SageTV program guide list with the EPG information but I cannot tune in to it as the .frq file only has "CH:502 sat:0 #:Bloomberg".

Any idea what I may have done wrong, is it possible that the plugin needs amending for my OS (Windows 7 64 bit). I only say it as my SageTV folder is in "Program Files (x86)" not just "Program Files".

What you need to do before performing any operation is to set the Overwrite option to false as the EPG update triggers the FRQ regeneration procedure which if not properly trained will overwrite your current FRQ.

Also, I probably need to explain better how this is working. Basically if the plugin finds an existing FRQ file for a given tuner it will load the existing channels lineup, will try to cross reference the existing channels name with the new data in the source website and will produce a brand new file ".frq.new" with the result. Now there is the possibility that the new file will contains less channels and this is because the channel name in the original frq file is different from the one in the source website, so the first "training" job is to make sure that the new frq file will contain exactly the same number of channels as in the original frq file.

To achieve the above you need to perform the manual name change and press the "UPDATE NOW!" button in the plugin configuration page until you've got the right results. What is probably happening now is because you had originally the overwrite FRQ option set to true (strange as the default is false) ALL your existing FRQ files are now empty.

I suggest to restore all your existing FRQ file (as you did backup the file did you?), make sure the overwrite flag is set to false and run a manual update and see whether you have a plethora of new ".frq.new" file in your directory. That is your starting point. Please forget, for the time being, about DigiGuide or XMLTV importer.

If in your first run you don't have the new FRQ file as explained (equal to the original or not), then there is something else, like the tuner naming convention for instance. It will be beneficial also whether you could please list here your existing .LNB files along with the existing .FRQ file name.

Also, please enable the sage debug logging, look for any message that starts with "DVB-S Importer:" in the log and let me know the results. The different pathname could be a clue, but it should work, I don't have the sources right now to double check, sorry...

Eddy,

Now that the chaos of Christmas morning is mostly over with the children now playing with presents and the wife cooking lunch I will try my best to go through these things one after the other:-

1) DVB-S Importer - Reset the plugin configuration using the reset option and then I set the following settings:-
System Messages - True (default)
Free-To-Air Only - False (I changed this as I watch more than just Free-To-Air channels)
Accept Renamed - False (default)
Overwrite Lineup - False (default)

Note - To explain why my original Overwrite Lineup setting was different, in my first attempts the Overwrite Lineup was indeed set to the default (false) but when I first tried the plugin and pressed UPDATE NOW it didn't create a .frq.new file so I changed it to True in an attempt to see what was going on. When I tried it with the True option that didn't work either.

2) Checked my existing .frq files and they are untouched, that is to say they have not changed.

Note - With regards my existing .frq files I normally update these in excel so the contents of each line is separated by tabs (not spaces). I wonder if it is possible that this is causing the problem? It seems unlikely as I tried running the UPDATE NOW yesterday after completely removing one of the .frq files and still nothing happened.

3) Yes I did backup the .frq files, they took me ages to put together so I am somewhat paranoid about losing them.

4) As per (2) no need to restore my .frq files as they are intact and in the correct place.

5) Ran/pressed UPDATE NOW. No change and no new .frq.new files.

6) .frq files are named as follows:-
anysee BDA Digital Tuner(DVB-S2)-0-DVB-S
anysee BDA Digital Tuner(DVB-S2)-1-DVB-S
anysee BDA Digital Tuner(DVB-S2)-2-DVB-S
anysee BDA Digital Tuner(DVB-S2)-3-DVB-S

7) .lnb files are names as follows:-
anysee-BDA-Digital-Tuner-DVB-S2--0
anysee-BDA-Digital-Tuner-DVB-S2--1
anysee-BDA-Digital-Tuner-DVB-S2--2
anysee-BDA-Digital-Tuner-DVB-S2--3

8) In the SageTV settings I enabled debug logging which then restarted the SageTV system.

9) After SageTV restarted I pressed UPDATE NOW on the DVB-S Importer and looked to find the log file. To be honest I couldn't remember where the sagetv log file is stored. I think I found it in a file called "sagetv_0" it had the correct date, time and kind of contents so I assume this is it. The log file is too big to show all the contents here (I could email it if that helps).
Anyway using Windows Notepad I searched the document for "DVB-S Importer" and there were three references to it as follows:-

anysee-BDA-Digital-Tuner-DVB-S2--2
anysee-BDA-Digital-Tuner-DVB-S2--3

David, the problem is in the .frq filename convention which, AFAIK, it looks like not SageTV compliant. Did you change the file names by any chance? Any way, normally the FRQ file names are very similar to the LNB format without the hyphens and this plugin uses the allocated tuner name to calculate the LNB and FRQ file name. Can you please do me a favour? I need to see the tuner names as allocated/shown by sage and the content of any of your LNB file for any different tuner brand you have. You can copy and paste that information in a PM to me.

I'm on holiday until next year and therefore I can't do anything, so please don't use this plugin until I have news for you, I do apologise for that.

Thanks
Eddy

Eddy,

PM sent.

Thanks,

David

PS I was a bit worried about what you said iro file names so I took the precaution of uninstalling SageTV and then starting from scratch and reinstalled everything fresh and the file names are exactly the same as before so it is definitely SageTV that is creating the file names for the LNB and FRQ files.

David,

sorry, didn't mean to worry you, is just that I did find the name convention "unusual", however I know now what I need to do in order to make the plugin working with your setup as well, so please wait the next software update.

Also as a little warning, in your posted .FRQ the channel names are very different from the current channel names in the "KingOfSat" website, so while you're awaiting my fix I will recommend to review and update your current channel names to match the one in the website in order to have a 100% painless transition...it should be fairly quick and it wont effect your current setup.

Eddy,

I will start updating my .FRQ file channel names, where the channel name has spaces such as "BBC One London" should I include the spaces or instead replace them with hyphens?

I assume I should use spaces (as per KingofSats), also is it important to use capital letters as per the KingofSats.

Thanks,

David

Correct, it must be a perfect match (case sensitive), also as explained in the plugin thread, there are instances where the very same channel name is available in more than one transponder, in this case the plugin will automatically add an underscore at the and of the channel name to make it unique, so if you want to pick up a particular channel on a particular transponder you just need to add as many underscores as many channel duplicates are available.

David,

can you please restore the other tuners name you had listed in this thread before? I recall there was another oddity...a forward slash in the LNB/FRQ name, something like that.

Eddy,

As requested I sent you a PM with my e-mail address.

I'm not sure what you mean but the other tuner is a Technotrend 3200 S2 and the .frq and .lnb are as follows:-

The .frq file name for the Technotrend is:-
TechnoTrend BDA-DVB Capture-0-DVB-S

and the .lnb file name is:-
TechnoTrend-BDA-DVB-Capture-0

Hope this helps,

Hi Eddy,

Sorry not had time to look at the code you sent me, but was wondering how easy it would be for your plugin to just do a dump of every channel of a given satellite.

For example if I said my Satellite was Astra 28.2°E could you not just list everything channel/Frequency’s for that satellite?

Or can you phrase the King Of Sat website with the SID number of a given channel?

Hi Dean,

the current plugin already does this if the original FRQ is not existent or empty, basically it will cross reference the existing channels in the FRQ with the latest data in the source website, but if the channel list to cross reference with is empty it will simply populate the FRQ with the whole list of channels it founds for the given satellite position.

It doesn’t look like it is working for me. I have 4 LNB files named:-

DVBLink-Capture-0.lnb
DVBLink-Capture-1.lnb
DVBLink-Capture-2.lnb
DVBLink-Capture-3.lnb

Each with settings of:-

#LNB setup for DVBLink Capture #1
sat_no:0
sat_name:"Astra (28.2)"
LNB=9750-10600-11700

The #number increases per file. When I delete the corresponding FRQ files and then do a force update within your plugin it only produces 1 file DVBLink Capture-2-DVB-S.frq.new

(It should be DVBLink Capture-#2-DVB-S.frq.new but misses the # off)

This file is empty only with the line.

#######DVB-S Importer for SageTV – by routerunner#######

It then looks like your plugin hangs as I have to disable then enable the plugin to be able to do another Force Update. I have waited 24 hours and rebooted the server.

I’m only using the Plugin for testing to produce a FRQ that is a dump of every channel. It might be a good idea to point out that your Plugin will break DVBLogic.

Another question. Does your plugin only use LNB files that are configured in SageTV. The reason I ask is I have another 4 LNB files form using the DVB-S2 card direct in sageTV.

Dean,

is this happening with v1.0.3 or v1.0.4 or both? Yes the plugin will only look for natively configured LNB within SageTV

It doesn’t look like it is working for me. I have 4 LNB files named:-

DVBLink-Capture-0.lnb
DVBLink-Capture-1.lnb
DVBLink-Capture-2.lnb
DVBLink-Capture-3.lnb

Each with settings of:-

#LNB setup for DVBLink Capture #1

LNB=9750-10600-11700

Your plugin only works if the Source is configured in SageTV

And will not work on DVBLogic LNB files which is good because it will break DVBLogic

Now on with my own plugin that is 99% complete :D

I'm surprised that the DVBLogic FRQ filename format requires the '#, or maybe this is the way SageTV knows how to activate the hybrid network encoder mode (you told me that you don't get the "pause" with DVBLogic)...

From what you posted you were using a version prior 1.0.3 which did use all the available LNB (the standalone you have does it as well), whilst 1.0.3 onwards only the configured in sagetv. Please confirm

I was using 1.0.3 then upgraded to 1.0.4 and had the same problem. Once I added a source direct into Sage then everything started to work, even for DVBLogic files. (But like I said your plugin breaks the FRQ files for DVBLogic so not sure if the # makes any difference.)

On another issue (sorry not picking faults honest :D)

As you know I’m creating a plugin that uses DigiGuide as your source to configure the channels in SageTV. This will then update XMLTV importer and create DVBLogic config files so you never have to manually adjust anything. You just add a channel in DigiGuide and it will appear in Sage with correct FRQ and channel number. If you want to change channel numbers/display names you just change it in DigiGuide.

Its 95% complete and so for works very well. (but more testing needed)

The plugin uses your DVB-S Importer and the AreaRegionChannelInfo.xml file from EPG Collector. I then use the Channel Number from DigiGuide to look up the SID in the AreaRegionChannelInfo.xml. Once the SID is found I then look up the SID in the FRQ file to find the FRQ data.

It sounds complex but works very well. It will need to be streamlined once I'm happy everything works.

What I have found is your Importer does not pull down all the FRQ info for every channel. For example the following files can’t be found.

Sky Sports 1 SID = 4214
Sky Sports 2 SID = 5505

I can search for them on the King Of Sat website OK but they are not downloaded in the FRQ file.

But must add that is only 2 channels out of 316 which is not bad.

Keep up the good work.:goodjob:

Dean,

I did a bit of investigation and here my results, but please check and let me know:

The file above I think is a stale file, please look at the date/time as the content format is pretty old.
Please remove all the 4 sources from SageTV and run the plugin update with the SageTV server debug enabled you should see a message like this:
"DVB-S Importer: No configured Capture Device Inputs found..."
Regarding the two missing channels, are they missing after a complete scan? If not then I noticed that there are multiple channels with the same name, in this case you must add underscores at the end of the channel name to pick them up. Otherwise they appears listed differently in the website and wondering whether the information are valid or not.

I had already removed all the FRQ files and I think that is why all is working now.

As for the two channels that's are not added, they appear if I do a full scan. And they also work as I have just tested them. Thou must add I usually only watch the HD versions.

There are 4 Sky Sports 1 and 4 Sky Sports 2 when I do full scan. I never have worked out why but it has been this was for a few years. I do know that if you use another FRQ you end up with Irish adverts.

The SID is taken from a scan taken this morning from EPG Collector. I will send you the files when I'm on my laptop.

This is one of the reasons I'm not keen on using the King Of Sat website.

The site relys on users updating the data. If a channel FRQ changes how long will it be before the site is updated? But the same could be said about DigiGuide.

Now if there was a tool/program that could script a scan on DVB-S/DVB-T this would be my preferred methoerd. This is for two reasons one the FRQ would be up to date and the second I can the change my plugin to include DVB-T. This could be run every morning.

This way in DigiGuide you just select Freeview/Freesat/Sky/Sky HD then select your region then everything else will automatically updated.

A bug introduced in v1.0.2 prevent the plugin to work when the original frq are empty, you discovered that and is fixed in v1.0.5

As for the two channels that's are not added, they appear if I do a full scan.

Of course they will appear as they exists in the satellite transponder, but they are "feed" which means (I'm in the broadcast business myself) they are channels not generally intended for public use and therefore my plugin skips automatically.

Great plugin works really well.

Having read Dean's post I was wondering if the channels were all names properly (ie the same as a normal sagetv scan, not Digiguide or any other names) and you were then to perform an update scan (rather than a full scan) from within SageTV would it only update the existing channel or would it totally screw up the frq file?

David,

I'm glad the plugin has found a good use ;)

The SageTV scan (full/update) gets the channel names from the satellite transponders (OTA) which can be different from the names in websites like KingOfSat or LyngSat where my plugin gets the tuning information from and therefore a subsequent channel scan will definitively change the existing FRQ files.

I cannot see a reason to perform such channel scan once you've got the channels in you FRQ in the order and enumeration you want. This plugin is designed to keep your channel's data up to date and if you need to add a new channel it has a very quick way to do it without performing any unnecessary and time consuming satellite scan.

The KingOfSat website is changed daily multiple times a day actually and is very accurate, "LyngSat" on the other side is not as good :(

I'm pretty sure there are offsite tools that allows you to download all the information OTA and save it in XML format...I recall I found one of those few months ago, but I don't remember on top of my head...

What is the format of the DVBLogic.FRQ files? Am I right to understand that you're getting the data from SageTV.FRQ to export to DVBLogic.FRQ? If is the case I might add an option to export the FRQ data straight into DVBLogic.FRQ format, would that make sense to you? Also, if we introduce an extra correlation file for the SID, I can cross reference that information to produce the "Regionalised" DVBLogic.FRQ file for you.

Eddy,

What I originally meant was would it be possible to temporarily modified the .frq file with a view to using SageTV's internal update scan as an alternative way of keeping the .frq file up to date.

I was thinking along the lines of:-

1) Assuming that you start with a .frq file that you are happy with which includes channel numbers from DigiGuide, channel names and frequency details from KingOfSat

2) Somehow you are then able to temporarily replace the channel names in the .frq file with channel names that your .frq would be using had the .frq file have been created using an OTA scan.

At this stage only the channel names within in the .frq file have changed and all the other information including the channel numbers, frequencies, sat details etc. all remains unchanged.

3) You then complete a SageTV update scan (not a full scan but an update scan).

I was wondering:-

a) would the .frq file channel numbers have changed or would they remain as per the original DigiGuide numbers

b) would the .frq file now potentially contain "new channels" that where available OTA but were perhaps not included within the originally .frq file

To be quite honest with you I never tried the SageTV update scan option, but I have the feeling that the result will be a pretty mess. Not sure how SageTV will read back and merge the information in the FRQ, but if you're lucky it will probably add the missing channels at the end of the file...

I can see that you're worry about potentially missing new channels, but you had the same chance before this plugin, however the good news is that DigiGuide will probably tell you about the new channels and if you are interested in adding them up then the only thing you have to do in the FRQ files is add a new channel entry where you want with the channel number you want and with the channel name matching KingOfSat like so:

CH:xxxxx sat:0 #:New matching channel name

Also, deanm is working on a solution to make this process automatic from DigiGuide straight into FRQ, whereby a new channel added in DigiGuide will appear into the SageTV lineup so I think you shouldn't worry about this.

I get all the sky channels and I don't use DVBLogic or DVBe4Sage or anything like that, I have tried both of these solutions and neither were reliable enough for me.

You will need to have a tuner (or tuners) that have CAM interfaces and that have native CAM supported built into SageTV such as an Anysee E7 or FireDTV-S2.

Plus a CAM (or one for each tuner) that are compatible with sky, I use Diablo WiFi cams.

The reason I looked at using the SID is because it is unique for each channel. I have looked at trying to match the channel names from DigiGuide/King Of Sat/DVBLogic and they are all different and looked like a mess to administer especially all the ITV regions etc. and again I don't fancy matching 320 channel numbers. Why can’t you make it work like a Freeview / Freesat / SKY box? You do a scan and the channels appear in the correct order.

OK here is how DVBLogic handels Channels that appear in SageTV.

1. You need to do a full scan on a DVB-S source. This scan is unique to that source and produces a TVSourceSettings.xml file. If you have more than one source you then need to do a full scan on each source. A unique TVSourceSettings.xml is sorted in its own folder. So if you have 4 sources this can take up to 10 minutes each and a total of 40 minutes.

2. When you have scanned all your channels you then have to added each channel form each source into as sort of master list. So for example to add ITV1 you have to select ITV1 from each source. This is where problems start because there are about 10 ITV1 channels. And you have to make sure that each channel matches.

3. Then you have to add the channel numbers. Once complete a DVBLinkChannelStorage.xml file is created.

4. From this DVBLinkChannelStorage.xml file you then create DVBLink Capture #1-0-DVB-S.frq file which is what SageTV uses. And again each source needs its own FRQ file.

This whole process can take over 2 hours when you first configure DVBLogic and is a complete pain in the arse.

If a channel stops working you have to ether scan every FRQ on each source then find the new channel or look up the FRQ on the King Of Sat Web site then just scan the transponder. But again you have to then add the changes to the master list then add the channel number and remove the old settings.

With my plugin (Which is nearly finished) it takes less than 1 minute to create all 9 files needed. But it heavily relies on your plugin to create a dump of every FRQ from the King of Sat website.

In simple terms it finds a channel number from DigiGuide, then uses the Channel Number to find its SID from EPG Collector, then finds the FRQ from a FRQ list from your plugin. At the same time it uses the DigiGuide Channel Name and Number to create a file for XMLTV.

Hope this makes sense.

Would like to ditch DVBLogic, but adding Anysee E7 S2 and Diablo WiFi cams sounds very expensive to change.

Dean, what I could do is to allow to compile the FRQ for a given SID, so if your plugin makes the FRQ as a list of channels (taking the channel number/name from DigiGuide, the SID from EPGcollector), I can then create a FRQ.NEW you just need to rename to DVBLink.FRQ...The new FRQ input format could be a list of:

My plans was to run the plugin every morning say 7am (this is when my server starts). So yes would need to run this off line.

I'm keeping a very close eye to the TBS6985 which is supposed to be a Quad DVB-S2 card + CAM. SageTV already recognises the CAM interface of the TBS6984 drivers which are common for the two cards, so there are good chances that might work straight away (very wishful thinking here).

I would be very interested to know if the TBS6985 proves to have native CAM support within SageTV. The idea of four tuners running off one hardware CAM with native SageTV CAM support sounds pretty good to me.

Let me know how your research goes, it would be an economical solution to adding more subscription channel tuners.

I currently have two TBS6984 cards and the device driver, which is the same for both the TBS6984 and the new TBS6985 (ETA unknown), exposes the CAM interface to SageTV which detects it natively (from the SageTV logs), but of course it fails initialisation because the physical CAM is not present.

Eddy,

I used to have a TBS6984 card but I do not recall it having a header for a CAM interface, how would you connect a CAM interface to the card.

It looks like this TBS6991 has a twin CAM interface built onto the card so it might work with SageTV - http://www.tbsdtv.com/products/tbs6991-dvb-s2-dual-tuner-dual-ci-pcie-card.html. If it did work then you would probably still need two CAMs for subscription channels.

For information it looks like TBS6985's are available on eBay.

Eddy,

I used to have a TBS6984 card but I do not recall it having a header for a CAM interface, how would you connect a CAM interface to the card.

It doesn't have the headers, but it exposes the software support to SageTV which recognise it. SageTV supports natively some TBS cards even with CAM, so probably SageTV is trying to use it without knowing whether is there or not.

It looks like this TBS6991 has a twin CAM interface built onto the card so it might work with SageTV - http://www.tbsdtv.com/products/tbs6991-dvb-s2-dual-tuner-dual-ci-pcie-card.html. If it did work the you would still need two CAMs.

If this card is the TBS6981 + CAM I seem to remember that SageTV recognise only one of the two tuners. Some users reported that while back, must check in the threads.

For information it looks like TBS6985's are available on eBay.

Unfortunately the new TBS6985 is not the TBS6984 + CAM as I hoped for, but simply a drop in replacement and I think they've done to fix the multiple compatibility issues they had with the PCIe controller on board of the TBS6984.

I've been trying this out today and I just wanted to say I'm very pleased with it, thank you.

I just made sure the channel names in the comments at the end of each frq line matched exactly with those used on KingOfSat, and hey presto, it updated all the incorrect ones for me. Brilliant!

A minor point: I think it's maybe a little harsh to insist that the capitalization is correct? I think I'm right in saying that, am I? For example "POP" didn't seem to match with "Pop"?

That's nothing though, particularly as editing the names is a once-only thing; if this works as well my testing today suggests it will, then the WAF factor will be tremendous.

Thanks again.

Edit: I see the capitalization thing has already been discussed, sorry.

You're right the name match must be perfect because it must be unique.

I'm glad this plugin helped you, but is not that easy to find, and I'm not sure whether this thread can be set sticky, also despite the DVB-S standard is not UK specific, the number of satellite dish here is pretty high, so maybe it could be a good idea to move this thread under the UK section...

It isn't easy to find, no, I don't remember ever looking in Europe Miscellaneous until I got your PM.

I agree this plugin would be useful to lots of Sage users, and that there is a problem telling them about it. I considered posting in the UK forum but decided that might be treading on your toes; perhaps you could put a note there pointing people here.

Have you considered contacting Brent Evans (the Geek Tonic); maybe he could feature it on his blog? I know Brent also set up a Google+ Sage circle a while back - that might be a good place to publicize it too.

Hope this helps. It's a cracking plugin!

I agree, it helps a lot with the WAF! One small issue is that the .frq files that your plugin creates don't open properly in Notepad, the word wrap is all wrong. I can open them fine in Notepad++, but I have had issues before with editing .frq files with this text editor.

It is the line ending, please use Wordpad or TextPad. Notepad is awful, however once the plugin is configured properly, in theory, you shuldn't need to edit your .FRQ files any more :D

Finally pulled the trigger on this and let it overwrite my frq files. A number of (unimportant) channels have been deleted:
1. EuroNews, even though I checked the spelling, it kept being deleted. Once I restored the entry from a backup, your plugin accepted it but the audio is in Portuguese.
2. True Movies 1 has disappeared off KingofSat for some reason.
3. More than Movies (more>movies) is not listed on KingofSat.
Other than that, it works exactly as advertised. Thanks!

The "True Movies 1" channel renamed itself to "True Christmas" related channel showing only Christmas themed movies, a little bit early ;)

"EuroNews" first language is Portuguese, but I reckon you just need to set the preferred language to English in SageTV configuration?

Thanks, I had missed the name change to True Christmas. The Euronews one was a bit strange as the audio track was set to "#6 eng MP2" which gave me Portugese, but selecting "#1 por MP2" gave me English! This was on the server, but when I tested it on my HD300 it worked correctly. It's not important as I only use the HD300 to watch TV.

The recent temporary disappearance of 4Seven and Channel 4 HD from KingofSat highlights a small bug with this plugin. If a channel temporarily disappears, it is removed from the frq file, but is not reinstated when it returns to the web site. Would it be possible to just leave the "stub" of the channel entry, so that it is picked up again when it returns?

Hi,

I understand your frustration, but what you're experienced is done by design, basically how do you distinguish from a channel being temporarily from permanently removed?

I know is annoying, however I've got a plan to add an extra configuration option whereby the "allegedly" removed channel will be parked/marked as removed and eligible to being re-inserted at the next channel upgrade.

Eddy,
That's what I thought, but in a way it doesn't matter as deleting the entry doesn't remove it from the EPG, so either way it causes confusion.

Pat

Hi Pat,

next release will have another option in the plugin's configuration that allows to keep the deleted channels in the .FRQ file for subsequent evaluation.

The new release (v1.1.1) also removes the "pilot:0" from the FRQ files which sometimes prevents SageTV from tuning channels successfully as it will be discovered automatically from the TS.

Also, before the update is recommended to set the "Override" setting to FALSE just in case, check that everything is fine before setting back to TRUE.

Cheers

Eddy,

Did the upgrade yesterday after testing as you suggested. No problems, and thanks for sorting the deleted channels issue!

the tool is designed to mantain the current lineup, to create a new lineup you need to manually import every channel via the sagetv interface or use third party solution that will add the EPG as well.

The UK section has a thread (http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60400) with some guide, I hope it will be helpful :)

it could be a good new feature for this plugin the option to add channels to sage automatically in case the lineup is empty, a good way to start from scratch without doing a channel scan...I'll think about it.

excellent! does this application generates the .FRQ files as well?

alternatively you could feed back the frq generated by the DVB-S Importer to the PredefinedDVBS.frq file selecting only the channel you want, run a sagetv scan that will only scan the channels you want and will add the channels to the tuner lineup, I never done it this way myself, but it could work.

I understand your frustration but to add channels to sagetv is not too bad, you can add your channels list you published in half an hour and because you have four identical tuners is a one off operation :)

The CBBC HD channel has moved transponder, but the old channel is unfortunately still there and not functioning. In order to pick up the new channel please change the channel name in your .FRQ as follow:

CBBC HD -> CBBC HD_

and perform a manual update in DVB-S Importer plugin > Configure Plugin > Force Update > UPDATE NOW!

Basically you need to add an underscore after the channel name in order to tell the DVB-S Importer plugin to pick up the right channel.

There is the possibility that the old channel will disappear in the next few days, so please keep an eye on the system messages, because when the plugin will tell you that the "CBBC HD_" has been removed you need to remove the underscore and perform another manual update.

The reason is because the plugin discriminate channels with the same name by adding as many underscore as necessary to make it unique.

As anticipated, the old CBBC HD channel is gone, however if everything worked OK the plugin should have detected the name change and fixed the .FRQ file for you, so you don't have to do anything ;)

Hi Eddy,

I just tried to reinstall the DVB-S importer and got FAILED- Resource Download ftp://rossisoft.co.uk/plugins/dvbsimporter/dvbsimporter_1_1_4.zip

Is this still available?

This is a bit embarrassing. Basically I discovered that the plugin stopped working in march 2017 and the reason is because the KingOfSat website went HTTPS and the jsoup plugin wasn't able to parse the new SSL website because failing to validate the certificate which wasn't installed in the jre1.6 I'm using, in addition the KingOfSat changed data format and finally had to replace the company router which FTP server didn't work properly, in summary a disaster :(

So, to cut a long story short I've managed to get a new jsoup parser which works with HTTPS and install the valid certificate in the JRE (manual intervention will be required), modified the plugin to parse the new KingOfSat data format correctly and fixed the new FTP server, still need to complete the LyngSat parser which moved to HTTPS as well as changing data format...

The FTP server is now working, but old plugin (not useful at the moment anyway) cannot be downloaded as yet because I had to modify user credentials and STV plugin submission system doesn't allow to update existing plugin unless you change plugin version, so you have to wait a bit, sorry

Nearly forgot, the new jsoup plugin requires at least jre1.7 and I'm still running jre1.6 on the production system which works best with STV7, so I'm testing on a different server jre1.7 before committing changes.

Cheers
Eddy

Thanks for the update. I knew there was a problem as quite a few of my Freesat channels had disappeared over time. I finally got around to sorting it out today, but I guess I will do a manual update for the moment.
I'm running SageTV v9 and would be happy to help you with any testing, if needed.

This seems to have stopped working recently. I've reinstalled it, but it's not updating the .frq files - it just creates an empty .frq.new for the first DVB-S card. Also, the button to update the .frq files disappears once it's pressed until you restart SageTV. I'm on version 1.1.7 of the plugin.

Strange, it works fine on my setup. Have you updated java version recently? I don't think kingofsat has changed data format, but I'm on vacation right now and will have a look when I'm back in few weeks time.

Just to update this, I managed to find an older version of the JAR - it's 30,167 bytes, although Sage still reports it as 1.1.7. That has fixed the problem, and my channels are updating again apart from More 4 where I'm getting the encrypted frequency instead of the Freesat one. I have set the plugin to only use unencrypted channels. Using More 4 +1 works fine though.

That file size you mentioned is relative to v1.1.5. STV only knows the version as stated in the general plugin's XML file so if you change the binary under the hood it doesn't know.

I attach here the v1.1.6 for you to try and to help me better understand the issue and seek a fix.

Regarding your encrypted frequency issue you just need to have a look at the kingofsat website, chances are you have more than one "More 4" entry and in that case the plugin will, internally, append an underscore to make the name unique during search, so to get the channel you want you just need to count how many duplicates are and point to the channel you want by adding to the channel name (in the DVB.frq file) as many underscore as required.

Thanks, Eddy the underscore trick worked fine with More 4 - I had assumed that disabling encrypted channels in the plug-in would get it to skip the Sky channel settings on kingofsat.
I installed 1.1.6 and it seemed to update all my channels according to the log. Strangely, it added back BBC3, even though it no longer exists:

The v1.1.6 removes the memory limit in the parser, before was limited to 1Mb only and that caused some channels potentially being missed, so I'm not surprised about BBC3.

The encrypted channel filtering is applied after all the channels are named and made unique.

Will try to understand why v1.1.7 misbehaves as the two versions are basically 3 days apart..., but thank you for taking the time to test for me.
