But what about using an Nvidia Shield as a client? You should be able to get the HEVC and 4K playback. And it also has most streaming apps that you would want like Netflix, etc.

Don't forget that Google bought SageTV in 2011. That's when the extenders stop being built. And you can use AndroidTV devices like the Nvidia shield that should be able to play the new formats.

I did that about 13 years ago as MCE did not support HD tuners like the HD-PVR so with MCE there was no way to get record HD from cable, at least not in Canada where you can't get CableCARDs.

Yes but the max for 32 bit is 400h or 1024 decimal. With 64 bit and lots of memory the sky is the limit but 4G should be way more than plenty.
