Based on v2 install script, there were two missing packages, I had to add:

sudo apt-get install v4l-utils
sudo apt-get install ivtv-utils

Now FireWire captures fine. Still working on testing...

Files are properly encoding... testing the end product directly from /EncodedMedia directory, the .ts files generate and the .m3u playlist work fine in VLC.
