Yes, I've wanted to do that too but SageTV doesn't seem to get that logic.

You should be able to set an SD show to record from an SD source and not waste resources by recording from an HD source...

It's more like I can only connect intermittently. Mostly I just can't. I reboot my server and my extenders multiple times and eventually sometimes I can get it working. But I'm very frustrated...

I run a scheduled reboot every night at 3AM on my server and I have a lamp timer on my HD-PVR to reboot that at the same time. I found that those two items have significantly improved my reliability.
