Agreed, I find that MPEG2 decoding on the Shield is mostly successful. Additionally OpenDCT offers real-time transcoding as an option for less powerful android-based clients.

FWIW, I have mostly MPEG2 recordings and have been happy with the miniclient on ShieldTV. WAF is high, kids use it without issue etc. I also have a MiBox and I stand with stuckless and many others...

FWIW when I encountered this same issue it was due to unmet dependencies with ffmpeg... ldd should tell you if the ffmpeg binary in /opt/sagetv/server is missing a library it needs to function or not.
