*** WARNING *** UPGRADE is NOT Free !!!

I was unpleasantly surprised to learn that the v6 requires an upgrade fee.

Be advised of this warning before installing.

This is MONTHS old news. No need to post it like it's a hidden thing or something. If you ordered prior to v5, you have to pay a upgrade fee, if your key was provided as a v5 key from Sage, then you get it free. I also think they are fixing it for people who ordered keys from PC Alchemy as v5 keys (since they show as v4 keys to the v6 upgrade).

http://forums.sage.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=22116 There's the announcement of the v6 release & upgrade fee, and here's the specific part about the fee:

Quote:
Version 6.0 of SageTV Media Center for Windows and SageTV Media Center Linux OEM Edition sell for $79.95 at www.sagetv.com. The upgrade is free for Version 5.0 owners and $39.99 for users of Version 4 or earlier. The software is aslo available in a $99.95 bundle with SageTV Placeshifter, or as a $144.95 package combining SageTV Media Center software with a TV tuner card. The SageTV Media Extenders cost $109.95 (wired) and $159.95 (wireless). All products are available at www.sagetv.com. Minimum system requirements include an Intel Pentium 3 or AMD Athlon or faster processor with 256 MB of RAM, an Internet connection, and supported network and TV tuner cards. See http://www.sage.tv/requirements.html (Windows version) or http://www.sagetv.com/linuxOEMedition.html (Linux version) for a complete list.

I was unpleasantly surprised to learn that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

Be advised of this before you visit Hawaii.

I don't see anything in the announcement in the forum about there being any upgrade fee.

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...248#post219248

Someone might want to revise the post before it causes too much brand damage.

How about these:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...ht=upgrade+fee

Just to name a few.

This was gone over and over and over again when 6.0 came out.

That would be because the fee was started with the v6 upgrade. I'd dare say most people have seen the announcement before now, you just unfortunately missed the annoucement back in December.

Actually, I shouldn't have poked fun at you; I hang around these forums too much, it seems. I've forgotten what it's like to be new. You're right; the licensing structure should be more clearly stated with the announcements. Perhaps a link to the FAQ stating the licensing structure should be included, although I couldn't find it on the SageTV home page nor in the FAQ referenced on the forums.

I realize the forums have gone over this several times, but not everyone reads the forums.

He's been around since March '05, but unlike the rest of us, doesn't troll the forums like we do (I'm assuming he, unlike the rest, has a life that interrupts).

I don't think, he's a troll. If you don't come here regularly, it's quite easy to miss stuff. I know that for a fact

Since v6 was the first version that needed an upgrade license, it was probably just overlooked regarding mentioning in a couple additional areas, particularly on the download page so it is clear which version(s) can upgrade to the current release for free.

I couldn't find it anywhere on the download page anywhere about which versions could upgrade or not.

Specifically, it says:
Quote:
Licensed customers may use the files below to update. If you are not a licensed customer, you may use the software for a 15 day trial. If you are already running a previous version of any SageTV software, you can just install the latest version over the previous version.
Looks like it might have changed since the 6.0 download page, no mention of versions there at all.

And I didn't say HE was a troll, just the rest of us .

I know... I mentioned a place where it was overlooked & could be mentioned. ("Overlooked" in the sense that being the first version requiring an upgrade, it was overlooked adding that info to additonal areas of the web site.)

How hard is is to add a line of text to the download page to clarify this? Where it says:
Quote:
Licensed customers may use the files below to update. If you are not a licensed customer, you may use the software for a 15 day trial. If you are already running a previous version of any SageTV software, you can just install the latest version over the previous version.
Just add:
Quote:
(SageTV Media Center Version 6 Upgrade Fee is required for SageTV 4 or earlier)

The download page that I mentioned above was updated, though even that wording is subject to change.

Please let us know if there are other places that could use clarification.

Perhaps some links to the most recent V5 versions of the software could be added to that page for those who don't have V6 rights.

The announcements for the 6.1 version could benefit from a similar sentence (the 6.0 announcement contained it), and also every new beta and non-beta version from now on!... No gurantee that people will actually see and read it, but at least Support could say 'We tried to tell you'

Also, a link to the forum thread clarifying the upgrade, and a link to the sage store upgrade item may be helpful

If there was an easy way to tell the difference between V4 and V5+ licence keys, that may also be useful information -- my V6 upgrade key (10x6 aphanumeric chars) looks a lot different to my original v1.4.10 key (8x4 hex chars)...

MY V2 license and my V6 upgrade are 10x6, but my Parents V5 license is 11x6.

This is a good start, but I'd make the notice much bigger, and put it near the top.

I know that folks should read the whole page, pay attention, yadda yadda. However, that way lies madness, not fewer CS incidents. I know from personal experience.
