Sage on the Road

Is there a way to have a network client "sync" up with a Sage server so that I can take my recordings with me when I travel (say like on a laptop)? It would be great to "yellow button click" (Hauppauge remote) on a show then on the "Send To" menu, in addition to the Playlist, have a Off-Site Sync list.

This has been requested before (see this thread), but there isn't a good way to do it at present. Even if you copy the recordings to your local disk, the client still needs to connect to the server to run its UI. That's just the way it's designed: SageTVClient cannot run standalone, but requires a live connection to a SageTV server to do anything, even playing back local content.

What you can do (and I have done) is install an instance of the full SageTV software on your laptop in a separate directory from SageTVClient. Then you can copy the recordings locally and play them back as imported videos in a running instance of SageTV (which can run standalone). Of course if you want to do this for more than 15 days, you'll need to buy a license for that copy of SageTV.

The drawback here is that things can get confusing when you upgrade to a newer version of SageTV. By default, the installer will want to install over top of the most recently installed SageTV product, even if it's not the same product. (I.e. it will happily install SageTVClient over top of a full SageTV installation if you're not careful.)
