Strangely named logo files in GeneratedThumbnails folder

In my GeneratedThumbnails folder I have what are logo files, but the filename seems to be incorrect as there is no period before the extension - but the last three letters of these files is either jpg or png.

See an example below.

Is this the correct filename or is a period being dropped?

2e is the hexadecimal code for a period.

Did not know that, but why would they have that in the filename rather than an actual period?

Likely to make the files work on any platform and allow any character. Things like / \ and : Its easiest to just convert all punctuation into alpha-numeric. “http://file” wouldn’t work as a local on disk file name. “.” refers to the current directory on Linux, for another example.
