Recorded vs Imported?

How do you deal with movies or shows that Sage records vs rips or Playon/Playlater in terms of needing to remember what folder a specific one might be in?

My top level Playon recording directory is an import directory for SageTV. The next time SageTV runs, it imports the shows that Playon has recorded.

Also, if you switch to a more metadata based UI (Like Phoenix or Gemstone), then it no longer really matters WHERE a file is, just WHAT it is.

You would still have to, in Settings, set the Directory so that SageTV recognizes it as an Import location... right?

Is there anyway to always import certain folders as recordings without switching to Phoenix or Gemstone?

I think you can do this using BMT where there is an option to import as recordings. Although I use Gemstone I have imports treated the same as recordings - you have to look closely to see the difference in the details screens.

Did a quick search and all I could find is a setting for "Import TV Media Types as Recordings" under Fanart/Metadata Settings which should help with TV recordings assuming PlayOn saves the recordings in the title right format.

I may have to look into switching to Gemstone after I get my server OS updated.

Yes - I think that is the setting that you want. It can be a little painful at first but after you get used to it there is more logic to organizing everything by metadata rather than folders. I don't remember how much of this can be done in the default SageTV UI. But Gemstone is easy to install and you can customize your menus. If you don't like it you can just turn it off and go back to the default.

Yep, that's what started all of this. My current server probably can't handle it so I've been working on building a new one on unraid. Not going so well as of yet due to my being married to my r5000 dish boxes for a while longer.
