"Sage" at CES?

GoogleTV is looking pretty damn good. Once they're able to offer most of my favorite TV shows at their original air dates, Id would gladly switch. Hopefully, sageTV's premium TV guide will stick around long enough for a seamless upgrade.

I never understood the $2 per episode, new or old, pricing. $0.99 a song has some merit, since it's something you'll add to a collection and listen to multiple times. But how many here watch a show more than once?

Quite often if I like it or I wouldn't have such a large archive of recordings.

How many hours of TV (not movies) do you have recorded? What percentage of those shows have you watched more than once?

If by TV you mean series then probably 10TB (not sure of the hours). I have 4 servers and record many/most of the same series on each server then watch them off each server to find the best recording to move to my unRAID servers. If I get through a recording without a recording glitch I skip the other servers but at least 50% of the time I'm watching multiple times before I move it to my unRAID servers. I have about 50TB of recording space on those SageTV servers with about 30TB used and 15TB of unique recordings including movies. If I really like a series I will buy the BluRay of it and rip it to my unRAID servers - like Chuck. Others that I don't feel like purchasing BluRays for or are not out on BluRay yet get left as recordings and are moved to my unRAID servers - like Castle. I would say I've watched 25% of my series recordings multiple times and Chuck (at least the first two seasons) 3-5 times.

unRAID server Stats:
2 servers with 35TB used currently subtracting duplicates would probably be a little under 30TB of unique recordings mostly HD-PVR movies. Also need to complete the ripping of my BluRays to my unRAID server only about 5%-15% done (6TB used). DVDs are 80% done (2-4TB used).

Interesting that this has come up. Here's an article discussing when this model works and when it doesn't (keep in mind, purchasing/renting episodes is for the cord cutters and it doesn't seem like any of us here fit that category of user).

I've got to think that you're the exception to the rule, but who knows.

The only times I end up watching a show twice is if I doze off the first time around. If I doze off again, requiring a third viewing, it's usually a good sign that I should just give up on the series.

I'd be a cord cutter if it wasn't for the exact situation that article points out. After a few episodes, you're looking at bill much higher than a typical cable bill.


The $2-$3 per episode / $20-$30 per season model can't hold. Eventually prices must drop.

And you are probably correct. I realize I am not "most" people. The biggest reason I record so much is that I want to watch it any time I want and not just when others feel it is time to show it again - I don't watch live TV any more. I also don't want to stream the videos. I want to control the quality

The last part of the article actually talks about this further:

I could have picked out five new shows to watch at a time and paid for the full seasons, giving myself an hour of premium cable each night. If the average series has about twelve episodes and costs around $29.99, you could get one new episode Monday through Friday and pay just $12.50 a week, or a little less than half of the average cable bill per month. In other words, with some self control, you can get a healthy serving of premium cable a la carte and pay a lot less than you would for a 500 channel package. And, of course, there’s always Netflix and Hulu Plus.

I do hope that prices come down. Though honestly, for a lot of shows, I watch them one season "behind" with Netflix.

Yes, I do the exact same thing to keep my "cord" costs to a minimum.

Yes I'd been following that thread, but not closely enough. I missed anything about Google's announcements regarding their plans for leveraging their SageTV purchase.

Google never formally announced anything along those lines (and I don't ever recall them doing anything like that for their other purchases though one could make some educated guesses based on subsequent product/service rollouts).

If that's what you're waiting for I suspect you'll be waiting a very long time

SageTV is the major back-end for Google Fiber's TV service (running v8.0.29.3 on the launch date, specifically). No official word has been given about if/when standalone version of Sage8 will be available. So really, if you need that - you'll have to move to Missouri.
