v7 to v9 Windows XP upgrade woes

Hello,

In response to the EPG shut-off, I attempted to upgrade my SageTV server to v9 in order to use Schedules Direct. This machine is an old one running Windows XP, but it works fine for SageTV, so I don't really want to upgrade it. I have run into several problems, and I hope you can help me navigate them.

(1) During install, I get the message that STVEVRPrstr.dll failed to register. I found one or two posts about this on the forum that suggest a KB patch to the Universal C Runtime, but this patch only applies to Win7+. I appear to have the latest available version of Visual C++ 2015 redistributable available for XP.

(2) If I ignore this registration error, installation completes, but the SageTV service won't start. When I run SageTV, either I get an immediate dialog box, "Win32 Error=0x2 trying to startup the SageTV Service," or else the splash screen comes on but hangs at initializing the service. SageTVServiceControl claims it cannot find the file specified.

(3) If I OK the 0x2 error dialog, the program does start. But, despite having kept my original Wiz.bin, I get the configuration wizard, and it seems as if my existing configuration settings are lost. Not sure if this is as intended, a result of the registration error or an additional problem.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,
Jon

EVR is not supported on XP so just ignore that.

Validate that you installed in the same folder as your old sage install as the installer does not try to find your old install.

SageTV service won't start in v9 WinXP

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade a Windows XP SageTV server from v7 to v9 in order to get EPG from SchedulesDirect and get my TVs back on their feet. This is an old machine that works fine as my server, so I'm trying not to have to buy a new one with Win7 or 10.

With some effort, I have SageTV reconfigured and mostly working on the server. But, I can't start the SageTV service, so I can't get my media extenders running. One of two things happens when I run SageTV on the server:

(1) I get an immediate dialog box, "Win32 Error=0x2 trying to startup the SageTV Service"

(2) The splash screen comes on but hangs at initializing the service

If I run SageTVServiceControl, it claims it "cannot find the file specified" even though SageTVService.exe is clearly in the same folder.

I'd be very grateful for any advice!

Have you tried running the Sage9 installer a 2nd time, choosing the "Repair" option? If not, try that.

Is there any error being logged in the Windows event log? Check the Windows Logs event viewer tree, in both the Application and System sections.

Which version of XP is installed... XP-sp3 ?

Post a copy of Sage's log file (sagetv_0.txt file, found in the same folder as SageTVServiceControl.exe) so that we can see if there's anything useful in there.

May I suggest that instead of starting this new thread here, it'll be most helpful to yourself (and others with a similar problem) to keep all the info in a single thread.

I've posted a followup to your original thread, here: https://forums.sagetv.com/forums/sho...Win32+Error%3D

Got it, thanks!

Thanks for the help. Sorry about the double post - thought it might be better to move over to the Open Source forum where most of the traffic about v9 seems to be, but I guess it got moderated back to this one.

In any case, your suggestion to look at logs led me to figure out (no idea why) that the directory where the service was being looked for was wrong. Uninstalled, reinstalled and quickly got back in business after that. Thanks for the help.

Was your original install in the default location or someplace else?
Did you use the Options button first to set the desired location if not default?
