Hauppauge 2250 Lessons Learned Sagetv 7

Not sure about Google buying Sage - yikes!

So I have installed the 2250 and its been quite an experience - nothing like an unpolished product from Hauppauge

So I am posting this so that others may learn from my trials and tribulations with the 2250

1. If you have a HD-PVR and use the IR blaster program you will need to reinstall the HD-PVR drivers after you install the 2250. The 2250 software driver overwrites the HD-PVR blaster configuration with its own configuration. You will notice that the HD-PVR does not tune anymore after you install the 2250. My recommendation is to install the 2250 first and then install the HD-PVR and then of course SageTV in terms of order of software installation

2. The 2250 is overly sensitive to cable frequency drops. I have a TV that is installed near my SageTV PC and it can pick up all 70 QAM channels across the board with no problem of drop outs. The 2250 does not unless its a near perfect signal. I am about 200 feet from my cable drop on the other side of my house. The only way that the 2250 would pick up all 70 channels (5 specific QAM channels (NBC and ABC HD for example were not working with the 2250)) was going all the way back where the run came into the house. If I added any type of splitter (which you would need if you have multiple TVs or products (TV plus Internet/phone) I would lose those 5 QAM channels (tried multiple splitters by the way and another cable run inside the house). I resorted to adding a splitter at the cable head-end outside my house and running a cable around my house and back in to where my Sagetv was located (in my home theater closet). This allowed me to tune all 70 channels from the 2250

3. Make sure you do a channel scan for both tuners otherwise tuner 2 will not pick up channels. This was not self-evident to me from within WinTV or SageTV. I scanned and remapped all the QAM channels (70 of them HD and SD using WOW) for tuner 1 and used that for tuner 1 digital tuner channel mapping. I assumed that tuner 2 would use the same channel mappings but not apparently. You must do a scan on tuner 2 for it to work. Once I did the scan on both tuners, I could watch and tape on both channels without an issue.

Hope this helps other people in the future

As someone who has fought with the finicky 2250 for over a year now as an OTA ATSC tuner, I greatly appreciate the third point. I was just copying the channel lineups.

I still think the 2250 is a bit of a freak.

But I guess that's pretty much academic now, right? :-)
