Talking YouTube "Unable to determine the file to download" workaround?

it maybe possible that everybody know this already, but I thought to share anyway.

Basically, tonight I wanted to show the quite amazing 2010 "T Mobile" advert flash mob at the Heatrow T5 airport, so I did search the file on my HD300 via the Online > YouTube Videos > Search menu option with the keyword "T Mobile".

Now, the file in question is the first in the list and whilst attempting to playing it back the dreaded message "Unable to determine the file to download" appeared. I was very disappointed, but my son looked at me and said "Dad, I know how to make it working, just give me the remote and I show you", well I did and he simply pressed the ENTER button few times until the file started to playback normally...obviously my 11 years old son knows SageTV much better than me...

Hi Eddy - same problem here.

Wireshark trace is showing HTTP status 301 (moved permanently) with redirection to https:// when error message "Unable to determine the file to download" is shown in SageTV. After multiple requests HTTP status 200 (OK) is sent and video is starting.

Any ideas what's going wrong or how to fix this ?

I don't have a solution but the exact same thing happened to me this week, also with my 11 year old son letting me know to keep trying and it will play

I'm seeing the same thing over the last couple of days. Happens not only on the HD300, but on the HD200, HD100 and PC client as well.

I'm experiencing the same thing as of this week. I tried looking into the OnlineVideoLinks.properties file of the lates STV update to see how it was reading the YouTube links, but I'm not sure what needs to be updated. The last time this was an issue for me back in '13, I recall it had to do with a change in the way YouTube links were being formatted and it required and STV update.

Anyone have any idea of what the latest YouTube link format is?

Well, hopefully the STV devs will throw us a bone before too long.

Keeping this up to date in a PITA. YouTube really doen't have an API that can be used to grab and play the video in SageTV. The STV has do to a lot of scraping to locate the video and download it. Every time YouTube makes a change the STV has to be updated.

IMHO I don't think this will be addressed.

sadly, you're likely correct. Sage/Google/Youtube - all one happy family....almost

I've uploaded a plugin "YouTubeFix" that helps alleviate some of the YouTube problems.

It certainly doesn't fix all of them, but helps for me.

Thank you. Where does one find the plugin YouTubeFix? I searched this forum and didn't see it. Do I need to find it through the SageTV interface in setup?

You can find the plugin through the SageTV interface: Setup -> SageTV Plugins -> All Available Plugins. Make sure "All" is selected at the top of the plugin list and then scroll down till you see "YouTube Fix" and install.
