Java 8 update problem

I found I had to update to Java 8 in order to get new plugins to install.

I have been using Java 7 u80 for years. Found that Java 7 does not like SSL used on HTTPS sites (where our plugins reside). So updated to Jave 8 u291 and had no problems getting new plugins installed and all other plugins updated.

But I then found that I could not tune any channel from my HDHR's with OpenDCT. If I switch back to Java 7 then everything works ok.

So...

Uninstall Java 7, install Java 8, cannot tune
Uninstall Java 8, install Java 7, can tune

I can switch back and forth between them and reproduce it 100% of the time.

I've attached Java8_Problems.zip. It has sagetv_0 j7.txt and sagetv_0 j8.txt in it.

In both of them I tuned to Weather Channel LIVE. Open in Notepad++ and search for Weather Channel and find it close to the bottom of the files and you can see where it tunes to the channel.

In the j7 file it plays ok. In the j8 file at the bottom you can see where it just gets stuck at:

So there are 32bit and 64 bit versions of Java and OpenDCT and they have to match. Any chance when you updated you created a mismatch (eg. 32bit OpenDCT and 64bit Java)?

For Java, it is perfectly acceptable to have both Java 32 and Java 64 installed on a system. In many cases, it is needed based on what is using them.

https://blogs.oracle.com/java-platfo...or-32-bit-java

So I have had both Java 7 32 and 64 installed on my SageTV server for years and years with no problems.

Maybe with Java 8 it is a little more "pickier" in how it is called when both Java 8 32 and 64 are installed on the system.

OpenDCT thanks to how Java likes to set up the PATH variable will normally use the last installed version since that's the one usually placed in the PATH variable. This is partly a limitation of the wrapper used for the Windows service.

You'll see a reference to the path "C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java\javapath" Those sym links just take on whatever was installed last. It's really not a very good design.
