Noob Question

I posted a request to buy some client licenses in the marketplace area, and got a response. But now I'm confused, because the licenses are "locked" to my user name. I would've expected them to be tied to whoever owned the licenses originally.

What do folks think this means, if anything?

To my knowledge, any SageTV client license is tied to the original purchaser. When I questioned support on that, they confirmed that is the case and can never be changed.

I don't believe that Placeshifter licenses have an associated username, only a key.

That's what I thought, too. I presumed when you sold a license in the marketplace you were supposed to stop using it, and the new owner had to enter both the key and the original owner's name into their system.

So is it even possible to sell a client license and have it work for the buyer? Would the fact that the client license is registered to a different user than the server license cause the client to not work?

I've purchased some client licenses second-hand, and they always work. If something isn't working, be sure to check the username and key entry again (I usually copy/paste from the info the seller sends to me). If the copy/paste doesn't work, then you need to contact the seller and have them re-send the correct info. The server license name and client license name do not have to match.

Although I don't always get it, I usually request that the seller forwards me the original email (from SageTV) that they received when they purchased the software.

Thanks for the additional info. I like your approach of asking to have the original email forwarded.

Yeah - keep in mind, not many folks still have that original email. The original buyer can, however, contact Sage support to confirm their license info. I would expect that to take a week or two, but they have never failed to respond, even this far after the hostile Google takeover.

And here I thought it was a friendly deal...just not so good to the pre-existing customer base .

I recently spent some time evaluating alternatives to SageTV. I was surprised, and impressed, to find out that even almost three years later nothing I could find came close to what Sage offered way back when. Which is probably why Google bought them .

Oh ... it wasn't hostile, but I'm going to refer to it as hostile until I have SageTV V8 installed on my server.

The name on the client license is not verified to match the name of the server license. The only verification that goes on is:

1. The client key is verified to be a proper Hash from the client licensee's name.
2. The Server only receives a client connection from a single MAC address with a given key.
