Sage on PS3 Possible?
I was curious, and there may not even be an answer for this yet, but would it be possible to use the Linux version of Sage on the PS3 seeing as how the console looks like it will be running Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 OS? It doesn't look like there are too many specifics about the OS and how it will be used, but theoretically would this be feasible?

The current code is compiled for x86 so it wouldn't run as is. We'll have to wait and see what the ps3 can do when it's released.

Sounds good. If your looking for someone to try stuff out, let me know. I managed to get a pre-order (3rd on the reserve list) So i'll definatly have one at launch and I would be interested in using it in stead of my current MVP solution.

I think we'd all be very, very interested in this. It would be pretty much the perfect client.

Unless I'm missing something, wouldn't this require a java VM for the cell processor? Doesn't sound likely.

Just to throw a wrinkle in that theory.
The PS3 is a Blu-ray player also, and part of the Blu-ray spec is BD-Java, a (limited) JVM with some special extensions. |

Uhm...why god why? As a thin client, you can get an MVP for a LOT less...as an actual server/sage box, you can make a PC for about the same and the PS3 wont have a tv tuner.
I guess I can see having it as an MVP replacement in rooms where it is...but...I dunno. (Then again I think the thing is an overpriced POS but whatever...) Wii is running Linux as well I believe. |

I understand an MVP is a lot less, but seeing as I am already getting a PS3 and have a perfectly capable PC/MVP combination working I'd just like to see if its possible to use the PS3 as an HD client seeing as it supports HDMI and 1080P. That way I could move my MVP to the bedroom and use the PS3 in the living room.
As for if it is an overpriced POS or not, i would like if at all possible to keep the merits of the next-gen consoles out of this topic and focus instead on the probablity of using this as an HD client. No offense meant at all to you Necro. |

(And it will also be quite a good games console.)

"Opposable Thumbs highlights a little publicized PlayStation 3 detail that could bug universal remote users hoping to incorporate the console's Blu-ray player into their tidy home theatre setups: PS3 lacks an IR port." It uses bluetooth instead. Full Article

I suppose I thought it more likely to happen on PS3 than other platforms due to the open nature of Linux, add to that they have the Cell SDK available as well as the kernel code and have been quoted as being proponents of user created content for the platform. Now Sage intigration may be something further down the line, but I still think that there is no reason given the right tools, that an excellent client could be made of the PS3. I think you would be hard pressed to get Microsoft or any other company for that matter to open up that much to allow something like Sage to run on their system (Not saying Sony would, just that it looks more likely than not due to their OS choice)

Sony have been making noises to suggest they will make it easier than in the past for 3rd parties to write stuff for the PS3. And of course they do not have an existing home theatre solution like Microsoft do - it is obviously not in Microsoft's best interest to allow alternative home media clients on an X-Box, but it might well be in Sony's as they do not have an MCE/Sage equivalent on the market. Given how much the PS3 is likely to cost, and how late it is compared to its competitors, they are going to need a differentiator, too. If I were Sage I'd be pitching to them.

A sage tie in with the PS3 is probably a good competive step. Since the 360 is a MCE extender, would be a feather in both system's cap. If I kept the 360, I might have given serious thought to switching over to MCE. If it came with a Sage extender I would've kept it for sure.

Having a lot of experience dealing with Sony on software developement at Microsoft, there is NO WAY IN HE?? I'd ever consider speaking with Sony about anything like this. Sony currently is doing almost everything possible to kill it's own company - flawed hardware, flawed business strategy, incredible arrogance that prevents them from doing what their customers want - it goes on and on.
I believe that their 'desire' to make it easy for third party developement is akin to a politicians 'desire' to serve the public. No doubt 'serving' the public is on their "to do" list, but I don't think anyone would want what they'd like to serve. -PGPfan
