STV Import: PSE Photos & Videos (Adobe Photoshop Elements Catalog Viewer)

This import allows you to browse/view an Adobe Photoshop Elements catalog in SageTV. You can select photos and videos to view based on the collections and tags you create in PSE and/or by different date ranges. You can then view the results as a photo slideshow or a video playlist.

There are imports for both the default 6.3 STV and for SageMC 6.3.7.

Download it here.

Note that this import currently only works with the default 6.3 STV.

Note I said "currently" . I'm very interested in seeing the new "release" of SageMC they have been hinting at...

This looks like a great import. I am curious to know whether you believe it will work OOTB with linux file paths.

Thanks for the answer and contribution

I've not tried Photoshop Elements, can it share it's database on the network?

How do you set up your import on client /server?

I'm not sure. You just have to be able to get to the catalog (.psa) file in Sage and then the paths for each file in the catalog are what you have set up in PSE. If PSE can locate the files then you should have no problems in Sage. Note that you don't need PSE installed on the server or client PC to use this - just point it to the catalog file.

It can share the database over the network but any local paths don't work. So, when you import a file into PSE you need to make sure you either use a UNC path or map a network drive so that it can be located from a different PC. For example, I have the root of my 'S' drive shared on my server and on my client PC I have mappped the 'S' network drive to the same letter. I actually run PSE from the client (don't even have PSE installed on my server) and make sure I import all my files into PSE from the S drive. Another option would be to map a network drive on the client and then use the subst command on the server if you don't want to share the root of a drive. You would have to set it up similarly for a Sage client to locate all the files. For extender/placeshifter local paths are fine. I hope this makes sense.

Just wanted to drop a note in support of this plugin. I just discovered PSE and think it's a pretty great piece of software.

I use SageMC so I'm looking forward to a version that supports it

Just an FYI

Photoshop Elements 6.0 stores My Catalog by default in a hidden directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\My Catalog

The database name has also changed to catalog.psedb. I tried but it won't load.

Obviously some changes and rethought might need to be given to support the newer version. You can download a full working 30 trial from their website.

Could you create a simple catalog in v6 with just few files in it and post it here? I will take a look at it. Thanks.

Here you go. Remove the .txt extension.

Thanks for posting the catalog. Unfortunately, they have entirely changed both the database type and format for v6. This would require that I rewrite the whole catalog reading logic so would take significant work. If I decide to upgrade to v6 I will definitely tackle this but not at the moment. Sorry.

Can anyone with earlier versions of PSE please confirm whether or not it works? Thanks.

That's fine...didn't think you would. Just wanted to make sure you knew to advertise as compatible with v5 and below.

Interesting to see they switched to SQLite in v6. That's something people have wanted since PS Album v1!!! I'm actually a little shocked.

Cool plugin none the less. Very nice work! It definitely fills a missing gap in Sage's feature set.

Edit:
I wonder if Lightroom's database is SQL too... anyone know?
PS OT: Gerry, does v6 have the ability to read IPTC tags already in the images and apply tags to match?

Thanks.

I think v5 might do this already? If I write the Tags to the files within PSE they show up in the ITPC metadata and if I then import the files into a different catalog it asks if I want to create new tags that match the ones written to the files.

Very interesting. I hadn't gotten that before, but it might just be because the program I was using prior to Lightroom wasn't writing them in the correct place. I'll have to test it out I guess.

I have just added an import that is compatible with SageMC. Note that the default "checkbox" image is a little hard to make out on some of the SageMC themes so you might want to replace this with a different image.

Craig,
I'm trying this out right now and have followed the instructions (I think.) The last step I did was "load catalog" and then "Save & Reload". I know there's supposed to be a delay with a large collection, but should I have a delay before it loads or anything? Or should I just be patient and wait a while before trying anything again? So far after a few minutes I don't see anything in collections, tags or anything other than the base menu.

Thanks,

Brent,

There is only a long delay when first loading the catalog but the spinning wait icon should be shown the whole time as the files are imported. Once the main menu is displayed everything is loaded. What version of PSE are you using? I was only able to test it with version 5 so it may not be loading a catalog from an earlier version properly.
