How do people have SageTV record "unknown" movies?

I couldn't figure out how to phrase the title, yet keep it short. I'm not a Netflix user, so our house watches everything via DirecTV. When movies are in the theater, we may not want to go see them there, but we know that we want to see them on cable when they make it there. Since we have no way of knowing when they're going to show up in the guide, what's the best way to add them, so that it will record it when it finally does show up?

Currently, we have a running list and just search for them every so often, but that's very time consuming and we sometimes miss them. I have two thoughts:

Would a keyword be useful? My thought is that we'll wind up with quite a few false positives with this method.

Would SJQ be able to do this? This didn't occur to me until I started writing this post. I'm thinking that SJQ could poll the guide and look for any matches, including variations of the title, but I'm not sure how to do this yet. (Off to read the SJQ docs and the SageTV API docs...)

Thanks!

Use a title keyword Favorite; p. 67 of the v6.6 PDF manual.

Add a keyword favorite, and after you enter it, Sage will prompt you for where to look, and you can choose "Title". That way it will only record if the keywords are in the title. You might get a few false recordings, but they'd be few enough to easily delete.

In the past, I could've sworn I tried this and wasn't able to because there were no matches found. Maybe I was doing something differently. I'll give this a try again tonight.

Thanks for the tip!

I might also suggest a partial word keyword. The reason being I've found the EPG data will sometimes not have the complete title. The movie "The Chase" was listed as "Chase" and "The Chase" in the EPG for the same movie.

You'll get that if you try and add a Favorite the "normal" way, you have to use the special Keyword Favorite option as described in the manual that Andy linked.

Yet another wish for a 'one-time favorite' feature. (favorite that will, once the item is recorded, delete itself... perfect for movies...)

After you add the 'keyword favorite' check in 'Additional Airings' to see if 1) the movie is coming up, and 2) if you will get any unwanted recordings. If so then perhaps you can 'tweak' the keywords so that you eliminate the unwanted recordings.

That would work for soon-to-air movies, but I figure some of these keywords may linger out there for about 6 months or more, since I'll be adding them while the movies are fresh in my mind (and the theater).

I like Fuzzy's idea, but given the above, a one time thing would probably cause issues for me. I'd have to keep adding them back in if there's a false positive.

BTW... I did get to try what Andy pointed out and it works perfectly. Thanks!

+1 for this concept, but I would be hesitant to use it if I could not find it in the guide since there might be a false positive on the search. You might get "the Making of" or some other totally unrelated result - Rules of Engagement or Rules of Engagement?

Yeah, I'd really only use it from the upcoming movies screen, so it'd be stuff that was already in the guide.

I use the web server and search the EPG; the results may not return anything but it doesn't matter -- because I use the RSS/XML link to add the search to my feed reader. Then I check the feed(s) (one per search link) a couple times a week and when the feed finally has the entry I want, I click on it, get the web page for that show/time and set up a manual recording.

This has worked out really well for the HDNet Sneak Previews which are often advertised long before they show up in the guide... This also has the advantage that I can check and set up recordings when I'm away from home, etc.

I too like the idea of a one-time favorite but until that comes about, I'll probably keep on with the search results feed method.

Yeah, I currently go through the upcoming movies about once every couple weeks looking for potential movies, and just pick a random manual recording. Though this doens't really work well in the conflict resolution regards.

I set this up last night for about 20 movies and then looked at the queue SageTV created. I had to go back and change some titles to include fuzzy (no pun intended) searches and others to only look on cable channels. I don't want the TNT version of anything.

This brought up another issue because I needed to specify 21 channels for each movie. This took a little bit of time. I searched the manual for "favorite channels" and "preferred channels" but came up empty on a way to create a grouping of channels, so that I could just add that group to a favorite. Did I miss a way to do this or is there nothing like it?

I should have added in my post above that I also use this method for programs that might interest me with generic keyword searchs: sweden, norway, etc. So in my case, having an RSS reader with all my SageTV search feeds is better than just using the upcoming movies view, though I have customized the heck out of that for when I'm in the mood for a movie. right. now.
