SageTV Service Keeps Abending

Just started this morning.

Bring it up, it seems to run for a minute or so, and then it bites the big one.

Seems like I have been here before, but cannot find anything in my notes.

No changes to the installation - for sure because the problem began at about 0800, the service recorded some shows last nite, and I have not touched the PC it is installed on until just now to type this.

All I could think of was a corrupted Wiz.bin. I restored from a couple different backups, but the behavior persists.

Is there a typical cause/remedy for the situation - other than Wiz.bin?

Edit 2018 12-07 10:02:

Thought I had it.... Restored Sage.properties from backup and the problem seemed to have gone away.

But five minutes later, it died again.... but at least it lasted five minutes...

Just opened the props file in NotePad and NotePad did not have any problems.

So I guess I am back to asking of there are typical causes for this....

Edit 2018 12-07 10:48:

I think I have a lasting fix: did the compact-Wiz.bin thing where one:
  • Kills the service
  • Saves a version of Sage.properties with no Media Center Import Directories specified
  • Does a Main Menu | Setup | Scan Imported Media
  • Kills the service
  • Saves a version of Sage.properties with the Media Center Import Directories specified.
  • Does a Main Menu | Setup | Scan Imported Media

But the question remains whether saving really-old-and-therefore-not-corrupted copies of Sage.properties (as opposed the restores from the last couple days) did the trick or compacting Wiz.bin did it.

My money is on my having renamed one too many movie folders and that compacting Wiz.bin was the fix.

Yup I have say that more likely your cause is with your Wiz.bin which could have become fragmented over time, because if you had a corrupted Sage.properties you know right way in Notepad it would been a mess I had that happen one time.

If you have the SageTCPServer plugin installed, try disabling it to see if it resolves the problem.

This sounds serious. It sounds like Sage is unusable for you right now.

Random thoughts:
  • You will usually need to zip up logs before attaching them. I remember having issues trying to attach something, but I forgot what it was or what I did to resolve it.
  • Was there a change or update to Java recently on your machine?
  • Does the event log indicate whether the abend is in Java or SageTV? If SageTV is running as a service, you'd think Windows would be decent enough to keep some evidence around in the Event Log or somewhere.
  • I like the idea of removing the plug-in, SageTCPServer. It reminds me that it is always recommended to remove all plug-ins first when triaging issues like the one you are seeing. The idea is to eliminate plug-ins as a cause and see if you can replicate the problem running the base software. I think this actually worked for me once, long ago.

Also to attach you have to choose the file and also click the upload button before closing the window.

You can edit an old post attachment with the “go advanced” button during edit.

Compressing Wiz.bin Q

I'm trying to compress Wiz.bin. I can't find the original thread, but the method is mentioned here as:

What are the Media Center Import Directory keys?
I see 2 possibilities...?
seeker/archive_directory=
seeker/video_storage=
Which should I empty?
Or am on the wrong track?

Thanks!

I may be wrong but I think you would just go to:
SETUP - DETAILED SETUP - GENERAL - MEDIA CENTER IMPORT DIRECTORIES

Make notes on what folders are specified and remove them from the list.

Then do the SETUP - SCAN IMPORTED MEDIA option to complete step one.

Stop service - copy the properties file (without directories)

Start the service - then do the opposite - entering the media folders back in
