slow operation after rebuild

I have been using SageTV for many months without problems. I just rebuilt my HTPC (full drive format and a lot less unused junk software) and now Sage (from time to time) is very slow to respond to keyboard commands. Often the Sage logo shows up (never did before) and only after several sconds will respond to the command I sent? Hardware and software is the same as before the rebuild. Any thoughts?

Lets rule out the simple things first.

1) What version of java did you install in the new build?

2) Were there any tweaks you had done on your old system that you might have forgotten to incorporate on the new build? Things like changing the amount of memory java can use, settings changed in your sage.properties file, changing the audio playback option in windows media player from AC3 to something else, etc, etc.

3) You said less junk, but are there any new programs installed in this rebuild that weren't there before? And the other stuff running besides sage, is it the same versions as before?

4) Are the driver versions for all the hardware the same as they were? A little too late to look at what versions you were running I know, but like I know as of this very moment all the drivers on my PVR box are the latest non-beta versions, so if I rebuilt I would be using the same.

Quick question: I've never touched settings for Java, should I? I've read people use various versions of Java with various consequences-- where does this stand now?

Java seems to be one of the biggest crap-shoots out there and a lot depends on how your system is setup. For instance, when I was running Sage 4, I had the latest jre build available which at the time was 1.5_04 (or there abouts) and it ran fine. When I upgrade to Sage 5, I also upgrade the jre build and had lots of pauses in the menu and some stuttering (I think the jre was 1.5_07). I went back to 1.5_04 and still experienced problems, including crashing of Sage (just shut off). Loading 1.4_011 or 1.4_013 seemed to fix the problems. So I have stuck with those versions (which ever I find easier when I reload, and being a tweaker I do that often enough).

Of course "fix" is a relative term here. When I press stop (I use the dynamic stop menus by Nielm) and it can take up to 3 seconds of the spinning icon before I return to the menu page. Is that normal? I don't know, but for me it is acceptable. Would things like that (which I consider fine) go away if I switched over to jre 1.6 (which some people swear by) or even if I changed the memory paging size for java in the registry?

I honestly don't know, but for me the performance is great with what I have so I haven't started tweaking that yet. Maybe after I finish making my PVR a super silent box I might play a little more with the settings in java once again.

Two side notes on the subject, at work I run a JRUN server hosting a huge java web application which runs some flavor of jre 1.5 (we've changed it around a few times) and have had zero problems, but my web application uses different features of java than Sage might, and my Sage might use some slightly different features than yours (add ons, etc), so there you have the crap-shoot.

The other side note, has anyone tried out these Sharkoon Silent Eagle fans for their cases, never heard of them until last week and now I am replacing all my computer fans with them, just WOW.
