Possible Java Heap Size Problem

Having trouble with placeshifter shutting down on a Win7 desktop. I believe it is a java heap issue but not sure how to increase the java heap size. When I'm navigating around SageTV via the placeshifter, PS just shuts down completely.

Currently, when I look at the SageTV system info page via the PS, I see:

305mb used / 389mb total / 389mb max

This PC is running Win7 with 4gb of RAM and is not my Sagetv server. Do you agree that this is likely a java heap size problem? I have no other PS issues and frequently watch live TV and recorded shows using PS with no issues.

I found this for changing the registry settings:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...ease+java+heap

But I don't see Frey Technologies in the registry of this PC. Should I be changing java heap size on the PC running placeshifter or on the server?

And is the location of the registry edit for changing java heap size different for Win7 than for XP?

I also found this:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...istry+settings

But I prefer making the change directly to the registry and not having to install a separate utility.

Thanks in advance

I prefer to use the utility. Nothing to install, it's two tiny files and then you get a nice gui to make the changes with, no maneuvering around in the registry. Takes all of about a minute to know that you have the java heap size adjusted properly.

Look in for 64 Bit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Frey Technologies]

On which machine? The Win7 PC running PS or the XP server? And both are 32 bit.

You'll want to change the JVM Heap Size setting on the server machine. The memory usage numbers reported by Placeshifter refer to the memory usage of the SageTV program running on the server machine. Using the tool you found is the easiest way to change the registry setting, and it should be the same registry key for XP and Win7 as long as they are both 32 bit versions.

If the Placeshifter machine is connected to your network wirelessly, then that is probably going to be the more likely cause...it tends to happen on my laptop. If the Placeshifter machine is wired, double check the Windows Event Log to see if there are any network related errors reported around the time that Placeshifter dies. I've seen recent reports of DHCP lease renewals failing on Win7 machines due to an issue with the Windows Firewall and possibly some other Windows updates...if the Win7 desktop machine is on 24/7 and Placeshifter seems to die at the same time each day, this could be the cause.
