HD Capture

It has been a while since I checked - but I'm wondering if anyone has yet to make an HD capture card and/or USB device that will take component or HDMI and interface it to a computer that is running SageTV? I'm not interested in over the air HD. I'm interested in running my Dish Network HD receiver with SageTV just like I've done with the Dish Network 301 standard def receivers. Thanks!

Thanks gents! I've seen people having problems with the HD PVR. Anyone have any general ideas as to how well the R5000-hD mod works?

I am just about to get two starchoice r5000 mods done. There is a sale on right now for them, however not for much longer. From what I have read they work perfectly. One usb cable from the stb to the computer. DD 5.1 works, no extra ir blasters needed. Only thing that concerns me somewhat is channel changes when watching live tv. It takes about 6-8 seconds to change channels. Not that big of a deal if you are watching mainly recorded shows. Do a search on the forums here and you will read some peoples thoughts on the R5000.

You are seeing posts from the few people who are having problems. What you aren't seeing is that 99% of us, including me, have no problems with the HDPVR. I am running with two of them, and with the latest set of drivers, I have yet to see a problem.

Hey, thanks all for the feedback! I'm going to go the two tuner route, get two of the R5000-HDs, and get a couple of the VIP-211s. Woohoo!

That's 42% of people who responded to the poll. You aren't accounting for people, who didn't even respond to the poll, then people who never read the poll, then people who haven't even posted to the forums, then people who have never registered in the forums.........

Also, the poll started in July, alot has changed since then, so you can't even count on the numbers being accurate anymore....

AND... People who respond to a poll like this are more likely to be the ones having problems. People who have no problems don't always feel compelled to tell others everything is working fine.

I must argue that there are plenty (a whole bunch) of people having issues with the HD-PVR and for someone to give advice such as 99% don't have problems when they have no proof to backup what they are saying is wrong. Especially when you are telling someone to spend money.

I have two HDPVRs and they both still don't work like they should. I have sent both of them back on RMA twice. I have tried them on three different machines running different Operating Systems along with complete system rebuilds with nothing but STV and the HDPVR's installed. That's six different devices with a 100% failure rate for me. The forum is packed with people having all kinds of problems with the devices.

It's not a lack of effort on my part... I have been working with SageTV support and Hauppauge Support for three months trying to get them to work right.

99% success is a bunch of crap.
There is no way that this device is that good and you guys have no proof to say otherwise.

As with anything, we speak from our own perspectives, not the perspectives of others. Your perspective is 100% failure when it comes to the HD PVR. My perspective is that the HD PVR has worked pretty close to flawless (minus 5.1 audio with my FiOS STB). I've been using SageTV (and the hardware that goes along with it) long enough to know that rarely do you get 100% success with no issues at all when you add something new. However, you also have to take into account that the people that talk the most and the loudest on these forums are the ones having problems. When things just work, people usually don't go out of their way to post 20 times a day about it. So, even if there are more posts about the HD PVR having issues than there are posts about it working, I'm sure there are still more people happy with the HD PVR than not.

Since I got the HD PVR a couple of weeks ago I've recorded several dozen movies/shows with it and it's worked every single time without a hitch and no manual intervention needed.

I understand and did not mean to make such a big deal out this.

I simply want to state that, although I desperately wish it were true, 99% success is not possible at this point with this device. And because yours or anyone else's works flawlessly, you should not tell someone that they will have the 99% chance of success, because chances are they will not... at least not at this point in the game.

While it's "likely" that the success rate is not 99%, none of us know the numbers of units sold and the true number of people that are satisfied or not. So, I agree with you that we shouldn't be saying that 99% are working fine. But that also means you can't say with confidence that the success rate isn't 99%. It's funny how these things work. We have an issue with a device, we see a number of other people having issues with the same device and we somehow assume that means that a good share of the total user base is having these issues. But the reality might be that it's only a few percent of the entire user base that is actually having issues. But like I said, in this specific case nobody (except Hauppauge) could say for sure. And even they might not know since plenty of people might have problems and never contact them.

What I would say to someone looking at the HD PVR is to give it a shot if you are confortable with the idea of knowing that at least some of the user base are experiencing issues. If you are willing to take that chance and willing to do some tweaking and troubleshooting then go for it. If not, then wait around a bit and see if some of the outstanding issues get resolved.

Just to be a geek and crunch the numbers:

The poll currently has 96 respondents, 49% are reporting total success (the single device users + the multi device units). This means 49 users are having issues and 47 are not.

Even assuming that EVERYONE with problems with the HD-PVR responded to the poll, it would take an additional 4804(!) satisfied HD-PVR users for a 99% success rate.

The poll is old, therefore not an accurate representation any more.

I agree with TakeFlight. Since anywhere you buy the HDPVR from should have a return policy, check it out for 30 days or whatever, and see if you can get it to work. I certainly would have returned them if I couldn't get them to work within a few weeks. I hate to be out that kind of money. I learned my lesson on Linksys switches that I bought from newegg, and waited a few months to troubleshoot.
99% was a generalization. I should have said most people are probably having little to no issues at this point, but 99% was shorter to type.. and inaccurate.
