Sage not deleting partially watched live TV?

Hopefully this is a simple oversight on my part, but I can't figure out why my Sage setup doesn't do a very good job of cleaning up unwanted recordings. For example, I had the TV on for 10 minutes this morning while I was getting ready and watched live TV. I turned it off (my Harmony remote issues 2 stop commands to Sage HD200 box before turning it off so that it ceases recording the channel that was tuned) and yet when I check the SageTV folder on my Windows Home Server, I see a 1.8gb file for the 10 minutes of show that I didn't really want to keep.

Often times if I leave live TV on in the background for a couple hours while working I'll see a whole bunch of shows (marked as watched) in my 'Recently Recorded' list even though I don't want them and I never asked to keep them.

How do I get these shows to go away? If I don't explicitly record a show, I don't want to keep it.

This occurs with both my HD Homerun recordings and my Dish Network R5000 recordings, so I don't believe it's a tuner issue. I also ruled out Comskip as I removed live commercial detection a couple weeks ago to try and resolve this, and don't allow it to start until the file is finished.

See the "Automatic Cleanup of Live TV" section of Appendix C in the SageTV PDF manual.

Is there any way to adjust how long sage waits before attempting to delete the partial file? I run comskip and sometimes it grabs the file before sage deletes it.

not really, however, depending on how you lauch comskip, there may be options. If you use Sage Job Queue, you should probably be able to filter your jobs to run on those recordings, though you'd have to ask in the appropriate sjq thread for assistance on setting it up.

That said, I kind of like comskip running on my live recordings as well, that way if I pause for a bit for one reason or another, I can then skip commercials in my pseudo-live tv.

I just started using dirmon2, anyway I can tweak it so it won't process temp tv files before they are deleted? We record quiet a bit, and my server specs are mid-range at best, so i want it to focus on true recordings.

No, there's no way for dirmon to know whether the files are livetv fragments, or intentional recordings.. it just sees mpg files. SJQ, on the other hand, is run within the sage tv service, and has access to this information.

Opus, I really appreciate your reply. I verified both of those settings and still seem to have this issue - I don't use intelligent recording and I have the default setting of auto cleanup enabled. I understand the manual says that these files might not be deleted right away. I've seen files that are more than 24 hours old just hanging out on my recently recorded list - is that normal behavior?

Obviously I just delete them when I find them, but it's less than desirable to have to clean up after live TV airings. Is there anything that might be preventing Sage from being able to delete these files in a timely manner? Is having TOO MUCH available hard drive space allowing it wait around for a long time before deleting them?

A couple things I can think of -- if they were inadvertently turned into Manual Recordings or if they qualified as Favorites, they wouldn't be auto-deleted as live TV, or if some other process has the files open, SageTV wouldn't be able to deleted them.

I don't believe they were inadvertently turned into manual recordings. How would I know if something is a favorite? I don't know that we've ever used favorites before. Do you think Windows Home Server could be responsible for keeping files held open and not being deleted properly?

I have the same problem. "Intelligent Recording" is set to "Disabled" and "Delete Live TV files when not using Intelligent Recording" is set to "Yes".

I just manually delete the live tv files every couple of weeks.

Take a look at the user ID that is being used to access the Windows Home Server. The user ID on your PC or extender needs to exist on the Windows Home Server and have permissions to delete those files. This works fine on my setup with WHS and others. If it can't delete files it is most often a permissions problem. If you need to create that userID on WHS you need to do it thru the WHS console and assign those permisions. The default permissions are full for the shared folders WHS created by default. If these are shares you created you need to make sure the shares were created thru the console and full permissions were given. Also by default the userID on WHS wants a password. That would also mean the same userID on your PC needs that same password.

There's no issue manually deleting files. Would there be a permissions difference between manually deleting and automatically deleting?

I'm already running the SageTV service under .\Administrator, which has the highest permissions on both the network and the system, so I really don't think it's a permissions issue.

Are you talking about doing this with extender clients or a PC client?

The extender operates from the server so if the service can delete the file you should not have an issue. If you are using a PC Client and the client can access the file over the network the client will try to delete the file. If the client isn't using an userID that exists on WHS and also has full permissions it won't be able to delete the file.

I use exclusively an HD200 extender and the service is running on WHS with full admin privileges.

Don't know what to tell you then. I have Sage running as a local service account on WHS because it needs no access to any network shares. I have the HD200 configured in the same workgroup as the WHS. (And it is NOT workgroup) I have a userID (SageTV with a password) configured in the HD200. I have a SageTV userID with a password on WHS that has full permissions to the Recorded TV directory. Any surfing of Live TV will result in those files being deleted in less than a minute. (Usually just seconds). You either don't have the HD200 configured correctly or the WHS user the HD200 uses to log in with.

I will play around with those settings then. I have it setup to use the admin account, which although it doesn't have a WHS account, it has overriding access to everything. I'll try setting up an account and see how that works out.

Are you supposed to setup the recording directory as the UNC path \\whs\file_folder\ or is it safe to access d:\ on a WHS box - where I believe D:\ is the pool? I have 5 hard drives in the pool.

Where is there a setting for adding the HD200 to a workgroup?

Setup in Standalone Mode. Settings-Advanced Settings-Server.

Sorry. User name and password info is only useful in standalone and is done when configuring folders.
