Exclamation HDHR not tuning to correct channel with SageTV

Warning - LONG POST

Setup:
2 HDHRs Release 20090830
SageTV v6.6.2.218
Java 1.6.0_16
STV v2009091601
Comcast Clear QAM locals (got to love redoing your HDHR scans every couple of wks)

I've started using SageTv for the new tv season.

Problem: 9 out of 10 times, SageTv ends up recording some NBC sports event and not the intended NBC show.

Reason: The HDHR turners are not tuning to the correct channel using SageTV, they are tuning to WRCDT3(ch 207) but, SageTV is setup to tune to WRCDT (ch 211).

After a number trials(over that past few wks), I finally did the following to make sure SageTv has the correct HDHR tuning info:

I run the HDHR software to create the 4 .scn files.

Contents of one of the .scn files:

I then ran the channel scan (for one tuner) in SageTv to create the needed entries in the Sage.properties.

I then closed down SageTv program(and service).

I then cleaned up the Sage.properties HDHR entry at the top of the file to only include the needed channels, copied that entry to make 3 more and named the 3 copies to match the correct HDHR tuner number.

As shown below: (changed the real HDHR numbers to HDHR1/2 for this post)

As you can see, there is no Ch 207 defined in both the .scn or the received channels per SageTv/HDHR scan.

In the EPG area for channel lineups, I confirmed the code for 211 found per the channel scan, matched the channel line in the EPG: 19578,211; as shown below from the Sage.properties file:

Would anyone have some clues on what to try next? I have been trying to fix this problem for a number of wks now, but nothing seems to work.

I wasn't sure if the Wiz.bin held any data as to WRCDT/WRCDT3, so I have not done a complete reinstall. Which would cause me to "lose" all of my Sage Recordings. (I could then see them via the Media area if I did, but it's not as nice)

NBC is not a big problem, as there is not much I watch on there anymore, but sometimes I like to record some thing and bam..some WRCDT3 sport show is recorded and not the WRCDT show I was hoping to see.

ABC/CBS/CW/PBS and others record the correct on the channel with no problems.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Note: When I was using BeyondTV for 2 yrs, I had no problems with the HDHR tuning.

I've been having the exact same problem (same channels and everything!). And I'm just up the road from you. I live in Rockville, MD. I actually created a thread a while back where I brought this up. One of the SiliconDust guys responded and told me to delete my scn and frq files and rerun the scan. That was a while ago, but I haven't tried it yet. I just removed NBC from my HDHR lineup, so it uses my HVR-1600 instead.

I've just been too lazy to try it, since my workaround is fine for now. Things have been a little unreliable ever since Comcast started moving things to digital. Most of the times things work, but Bravo goes off of clear QAM at night for some reason, despite still working on my STB. I think there's a big change scheduled for early November, so I'm trying to avoid any rescans until then. But, if you try out SiliconDust's suggestion, please report back. It its going to fix my NBC problem then I'll probably do a rescan early.

The HDHR setup for Windows instructions point out in bold text that you must scan on all digital tuners. The third tip below that mentions the files you need to copy if you want to chance things by doing it manually. Since you have 2 HDHRs/4 tuners, do you have all 4 .frq files?

If you didn't actually scan in SageTV for each tuner, you don't have .frq files for all tuners and tuning won't work properly. Either scan on all digital tuners or copy the correct files, if the .frq files are missing.

I only have 3 FRQ files related to my HDHR:
  1. Silicondust HDHomeRun Tuner 10171800-0-0-QAM.frq
  2. Silicondust HDHomeRun Tuner 10171800-1-0-QAM.frq
  3. QAMScan-Silicondust HDHomeRun Tuner 10171800-0-0.frq

I think I followed the directions correctly. I believe I only scanned for channels once using the SiliconDust utility, but I scanned for channels within Sage for each tuner. I do have two SCN files- one for each tuner.

As I said, I think I followed your directions carefully. I read through them again to double check. Does it sound like I did something wrong?

I just went through something very similar here. Mine came down to channel's having decimaled numbers in HDHR's config that WEREN'T even enabled. I think this was confusing the HDHR software when sage was sending it's request.

KNBCDT was in HDHR's config as 4, enabled.
KNBCDT2 was in HDHR's config as 705 or something, disabled.
KNBCDT4 was in HDHR's config as 4.4, disabled.

When sage was attempting to tune KNBCDT (the only one it had enabled) it would occasionally get KNBCDT4 (the Universal Sports broadcast, that I think you are also seeing, coincidentally). I think this is because HDHR does not properly support the decimaled numbers, and when it did it's internal lookup to get the tuning parameters, it found 4, and 4.4. It seemed random which it would grab.

My solution was to go through the HDHR lineup, and just delete the channel number from the disabled channels, have had no problems since then.

Thank you for the input.

1) I have 4 .scn files
2) I have 4 .frq files

The scanning of all tuners would create the same .frq files as if I created by copying one and renaming the file to match the tuner.

It's not a .frq problem, for the first 3 wks, I did the scan in sagetv as per the setup steps and found it was faster to do the copy, and it ensured no other random ch showed up on the .frq file.

Also, I found doing the ch scan in sagetv created wrong tuner information at the top of the sage.prop file, I scanned once and created the correct ch info for each tuner by hand.

When I run the hdhomerun setup; I do a scan, it shows the ch #/ch name correctly(211 WRCDT). Unchecked all ch not used. I then edited the hdhomerun file which is created by the hdhomerun turner so it only sees the ch # info per the .scn.

The ch # all the 3 digit numbers which match by name/number the ch guide web site.

Fuzzy; Agree about the 4.x idea, but there is no 4.x numbers in the settings, I had the same idea, so I did the same and made sure all settings did not include the 4.x ch numbers, unless it's contained within the Wiz.bin file.

Does the Wiz.bin contain any ch information? if it does that could be the issue. Unable to read any of data contained with it.

Hi there, use to live in MD, had to get out, could not stand the traffic any longer and now take VRE into DC.

As far as the delete and rescan to recreate the files, been doing that for the past few weeks.

On my BeyondTV setup(i still have it as a backup, but REALLY don't want to use it), I've done testing over the past weekend, and everytime it correctly record WRCDT, no problems at all.

I wouldn't rescan unless other stations drop off.

Another problem with comcast, they are also moving the MHZ chs around, forcing a rescan so I can get the MHZ #3 ch for the wife (chinese shows on there). Had to rescan twice in the past 2 wks because of that.

What info is wrong in the properties file? Maybe it isn't wrong & what you are adding isn't correct...

What file is being manually edited here?

Try removing all HDHR tuners in SageTV, then set up a single HDHR tuner w/o editing any files by hand & see if that one tuner tunes correctly. If you have followed the instructions exactly as I've posted them & it still doesn't tune properly on that single tuner, then you should contact SageTV. They will probably ask for debug logs, but don't send them unless asked.

You could try a clean setup by removing all the HDHR files (.scn and .frq) along with removing the SageTV properties files and reconfiguring.

What version of Windows are you using? If Vista, some files could be in the VirtualStore instead of the SageTV directory.

Thanks!

The wrong tuner info located at the top of the sage.prop file had some channels which were not selected; I figured best to setup one tuner correctly and then copy the same info for each tuner ( as per my org post, it shows the chans setup correctly for each tuner).

What file is being manually edited here?
I edited the Digital Cable.xml, so only the 'true' channls were left. Trying remove any trace of the WRCDT3(ch207) from the files, so nowhere would it be found, sagetv should have no idea how to tune to it. (unless tuner info is stored in Wiz.bin)

The OS being used is Windows Server 2008. The Digital_cable.xml file is located in "C:\ProgramData\Silicondust\HDHomeRun"

I still have my WinXP BeyondTV/SageTv/HDhomerun PC(diff hardware then the W2K8 PC), I keep it turned off except for when I need to create new .SCN files. I use the HDhomerun tool to created the .SCN files for SageTv and then copy them to the W2K8 server for setup on SageTv.

Did a 'Clean' Setup of the tuners last night.

0) Deleted the .SCN/.FRQ/Sage Prop files in the SageTv folder.

1) Ran the HDHR tool to created New .SCN files, 'unchecked' WRCDT3 so it would not be included in the .SCN file. I run the channel scan on each of the tuners. Just to make sure there wasn't an issue with the tuners, after each scan, I fixed the chan info and pressed apply. (did this on my WinXP PC)

2) copied the .SCN files from my WinXP PC to my SageTv server SageTv folder.

3) Run SageTv and added each of the tuners to SageTv, did a channel scan for each tuner.

4) Setup WRCDT(ch207) (via the Ch Guide in SageTv) to record all shows from 11:30PM to 10am today.

Findings:

All of the shows record from 11:30pm to 6am today were from WRCDT3(ch207) ; from 6am to 10am were from WRCDT(ch211). Odd.

I checked the HDHR tuner info inside each recording and found SageTv used the same tuner. still Odd.

Doing testing from 10am to 3pm today, I found I was able to get SageTv to tune all 4 of the HDHR tuners to the incorrect ch WRCDT3(207), and by stopping and starting (over and over a few times) I was able to get each tuner to finally see the correct WRCDT(ch221).

Again, nowhere in the tuner information at the top of the sage.prop file or in the .SCN/.FRQ files does it talk about WRCDT3(ch207)

A question no one seems to know is if the Wiz.bin file contains any tuning information. As this is the one file I have not recreated over the past 2wks(not wanting to lose all of my shows via the SageTV recording list, as I did 2 wks ago when I tried to fix by deleting the Wiz.bin file)

Thank you for your input.

What opus4 (Andy) suggested above was deleting all of the .frq and .scn files. Remove all the HDHR tuners from SageTV. Use the HDHR software and set up only ONE tuner on a single HDHR. Make sure not to edit ANY files and not to copy it to any other tuners. Now go into SageTV and only set up that ONE SINGLE tuner for SageTV. (Do NOT set up any additional HRHR tuners) Scan the channels and test. If you still have the issue contact support and be ready to provide the debug log they will ask for. But you need to narrow it down and test only one single tuner from your HDHR.

As I said earlier in this thread, I'm pretty much having the exact same problem as Nethead, but I only have on HDHR. Is there a good way to tell if this is a Sage problem vs. an HDHR problem?

Please use the link to the HDHR intructions I posted above and follow the directions EXACTLY as written, because if the sequence of what you did in the part of your post that I quoted is really what you did, then you've removed the .scn files created by the HDHR software before running a scan in SageTV.

And, yes, what Gerry wrote is what I meant for testing a single tuner.

Thx, sorry, should have put in the reply "did the one tuner set up, when it was set to record SNL on WRCDT(211), it started recording some sports event on WRCDT3(207)".

Stopping/Starting the recording I was able to get WRCDT(211) to show up and record SNL). After that i did the setup all 4 tuners.

Hi,

Note: I did the HDHR scan on one machine and then copied the .scn files to the SageTV PC. (thus the deletion of the scn files and the frq files)

I did follow the steps you have in your FAQ (done those steps for the past 4wks )

When I did the ch scan in SageTv to create the .frq file, it found the 25 ch which were listed in the .scn file. I setup SNL to record last night (as per my last reply) and it recorded the wrong ch.

Still having WRCDT3(ch207) showing up instead of WRCDT(ch211)

does the Wiz.bin file contain any ch info?

As I mentioned above, contact tech support to deal more with the tuning issue. Since you are saying that the HDHR setup instructions have been followed, there is nothing more I can look into.

I was thinking it was a problem with SageTv telling HDHR to record "WRCDT" and the HDHR was finding the WRCDT3(ch207) before finding WRCDT(ch211).

But, for the past 2wks, I have been removing WRCDT3 from any .scn file via the HDHR ch scanning; thus no WRCDT3 inside the .frq file, so SageTv should not be telling HDHR there even is a WRCDT3(207).

Note; I noticed with the HDHR program ch scanning yesterday that WRCDT was now appearing before WRCDT3 in the ch scanning list in HDHR. Maybe comcast itself has noticed a problem?

The only place I can think there maybe some WRCDT/WRCDT3 defined which we cannot see is inside the Wiz.bin file.

nethead-

Have you tried using the HDHR channel setup utility to view/tune your WRCDT channels? It seems like that utility always properly tunes WRTDT and WRTDT3.

Yes, using the HDHR setup tool, it does correctly tune to WRCDT when that ch is selected in the tool (In the tool, I selected VLC to play video). (again it also works correctly in BTV(beyondtv), used BTV for 2yrs without a problem, Just started using SageTv to record this past Sept'09).

Thx

P.S. I love my HD200, so much quieter then the PC I was using with BTV. (I run SageTv Server on a i7 PC Server in the basement , keeps it cooler and the heat/hardware sounds faraway)

When I was having this problem, it was something in the HDHR setup (in my case, a poorly numbered subchannel)... it was NOT anything to do with the SCN or FRQ files. I still recommend going through and removing the information for the unwanted channels FROM THE HDHR Setup program. The only channels that should have ANY number or name information, and be enabled, are the channels you intend to use. HDHR maintains its own channel list. It does not use the SCN and FRQ files directly (Sage just uses them fro knowing what freq's to tell to the HDHR).
