CPU Fan Heatsink Recommendations?

One of my most hated events (since i started using Sage) occurred tonight right before my eyes--a server hardware failure... A quick flash on the screen... [something or other] communicating with [something or other].. it was too quick to read, and then the server powered-off. WAF got rather low.

Restarted and the same thing happened, right about when starting up Windows.

I thought it might be the battery UPS system detecting a spike or electrical noise, so i unplugged the USB cable and crossed my fingers (hoping the UPS software was just being too sensitive), and rule that possibility out. Nope, same thing.

But after this restart, i noticed during POST, the CPU temp was 71C degrees! Ouch. I take apart the case and notice the heatsink fan isn't spinning, or just barely, sometimes. It's a Masscool AMD K8, ball bearing fan. It's only been running for maybe a year and a few months.

I have a AMD Socket 939 in the server, and want to know if there are any recommendations on a replacement....or if there is a certain price point or features i should target. It seems you can go anywhere from $6 up to $90 for a retail CPU fan/heatsink.

My only goal is something reliable, doesn't even have to be quiet, just keep it cool and not crap out after a year and cause the mobo system monitor to shut everything down, which i'm very grateful worked...since the CPU does not seem to be damaged.

I've been extremely happy with my Scyth Ninja Mini. I even run it fanless on a AMD 4850e. I sit at about 45c normal operation in a 68F room. I hit about 58 running 100% both cores for extended periods of time. Add a nice fan or even the stock fan and I'm sure you'll be satisfied.

One more vote for the mini ninja. I'd replace the stock fan though, it's a bit raspy. Chances are if you have good cooling in the case you won't need it, I didn't when it was cooling a 4200+.

thanks. i felt i had to get something tonight, but my local computer store didn't have any scythe stuff. I ended up just replacing the fan instead of the whole heatsink. it says a MTBF of 50,000 hours, so we'll see. In the meantime, i'll keep your recommendations of the ninja mini in mind when i get around to replacing the motherboard and CPU some day.

I'm also using the Ninja Mini without a fan. I was surprised how well it works, and have been happy with the results. My CPU (Core 2 Duo E8400) seldom goes over 40 C. The cooler sits right in front of the exhaust case fan so I expect that helps out a lot.
