DCR-2650

I have seen only one post regarding success with the WinTV DCR-2650. If there are more than I am searching incorrectly. The one post I found shows a lengthy list that appears to be above my skill level. I got my PC to recognize the device through WMC but Sage 7.1.9 does not.

Can anyone offer any guidance regarding SageTV recognizing the 2650?

I really want this to work, but with the cable company issues, the LOUSY tech support from Hauppagge (and the fact that they blame each other), and WMC losing the tuner when the computer is idle (I have tried my power settings, usb settings, etc) I might have to take the 2650 back and I don't want to do that.

Any help is extremely appreciated.

The instructions appear to show editing the source once it has been installed. My 2650 does not even show in the source list. Am I missing something.

Concur. I'm at the same point.

I've got my 2650 kicked around with the DCA with a Win7 laptop... and don't know where to go next.

I can connect it to my Sage 7.1.9 host (XP-32bit) but what comes next. Lots of offhand remarks about "manually setting your firewall" and installing DCT...but no recipe or even a walk through.

I'm happy to guinea-pig myself for the community to be the documented case, but some help is needed.

Here are my steps so far:

Power in, connect to usb2 port of Win7 Prem laptop
['Drivers not detected']
Go to hauppaupge.com and download WinTV-DCR-2650 Installer Version 1.5 29310.zip from support section
Unzip to a scratch directory
Run setup.exe at the root of the unzipped directory
Select English as my language
Choose 'Install Drivers'
Validate that the 2650 is plugged in to a USB2 port. (It is)
Start the driver install

Software goes into a slow dance searching for hw and update driver.
USB sound cue announces 'bound' state, as system light on the 2650 changes from red to green.

Drivers show 'updated successfully. click to exit.' Click

Now I run 'install software' which performs firmware update.
Double check USB connections. The press NEXT to begin fw update.
msg: preparing for fw update, please wait...
2650 lights up like a christmas tree...as usb annunciator sounds 'disconnected'
2650 steps through all of its status lamps and then drops back to red status on the system light
usb annunciator sounds 'connected'
system light on the 2650 changes from red to green.
Software reports Firmware upgrade complete. Firmware is now version 20111025.

"Are you using a tuning adapter? If so click yes." [[I don't bloody know.]]
Click Yes. Which starts the install of Tuning Resolver Service.

Do you want to install the Haup USB controller? Oh sure.

Tuning resolver service installed. Finish

Do I want to install the 2650 IR service. (This I know I don't need, so, no.)
Finished

Start Windows Media Center
The golden secret: choose express setup in mce
extra galley will now show Digital Cable Advisor. run it. it succeeds.

Goody. Now the 2650 is ready. Plug it into the XP system hosting Sage 7.1.9

Further adventures continued tomorrow when Comcast gets here to hand me a cable card.

I just noticed this alternative. Wish I'd known about it when I ordered the 2250 because it's about the same price. Does it record HD content? I would think for that price it'd record the same quality as the 2250. Still, I'm thinking it might actually work better on a wireless network?

BTW, over on the SiliconDust forum I was told that the Hauppauge 2650 is actually made by SiliconDust, and Hauppauge just labels it. I'm also still unclear what all the ports are for. There doesn't appear to be an ethernet port on the 2650 so I guess it has to be connected via USB 2.0 ? For some reason I didn't think USB 2 speeds were enough to support HD content, but they must be. (Seems like two tuners would pretty much max things out though.) Also, the Prime has an ethernet port but also a USB port. What's the USB port for? USBUIRT?

These rigs still confuse me.

SageDCT + 2650 = SD OK, HD not so OK

Wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar with either a 2650 or a HDHR Prime.

First, I'll say that initial setup was a breeze. SageDCT is very groovy. The cablecard process was painless here with Comcast Chicagoland as well.

Here's the problem:

I have SageDCT set up and working fine - all of my SD channels are flawless. However whenever I try to watch one of my HD channels, the picture is near frozen - maybe a few fps.

I've tried hooking the 2650 to my Sage server (Win XP, Core2Duo E6400) and to a separate machine I had around (Win7, Pentium 4 3ghz). Both configurations result in the same behavior.

I've tried different USB controllers.

I've tried connecting the 2650 directly to the cable run entering the house.

I've tried viewing the HD channels on my HD200, HD300, and a client PC, all the same result.

There are no errors in either the SageDCT or SageTV logs, although I'm happy to provide them if anyone wants to take a look.

I am recording to UNC paths - about the only thing I haven't tried is hooking the 2650 back up to my Sage server and switching to local paths.

My other tuners are an HD-PVR, a PVR500 and PVR1600. Those work fine as they have for years.

WMC is able to use the 2650 and view the same HD channels without incident.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks - Robb
