Dan,

You are totally right about the SD being the right choice. The one thing I am *very* worried about was mentioned right after your post. Basically, if I am going to record in HD on my main machine hookup up to TV how am I going to watch it on the SD extender? Basically, I am hoping you create a method to transcode HDTV recorded shows down to SDTV so I can use an HDTV tuner and not have to deal with the nonsense. Recording SD and HD for all HD shows seems like a mediocre solution, but I would welcome it over nothing at all.

Only problem you'll have with transcoding HDTV to SD is you better have a decent machine, or you'll have a stuttery mess on your hands..
