SageTV and WM9
Does SageTV support the Windows Media 9 (.wmv) format within its file management? If not, it this planned? If not planned, what are the reasons? I am not at all familiar with the file structure SageTV, but providing a conversion program or allowing the user to encode the mpg files to wmv and putting this back into the SageTV file system would save tons of disk space

We don't support Windows Media format and currently don't have plans to. The reason is because the file format is proprietary. Because of this, there's no way to implement advanced features like streaming without becoming dependent upon a Microsoft-based streaming architecture. We prefer our platform-neutral streaming architecture.

Thanks for the reply. Not the answer I wanted but I understand. It is a shame because it exends the HD dramatically.

what about xvid to be nice and open source...
although there are plenty of setups for doing this already.. and with interlaced material there are very powerful avisynth scripts/plugins that i've just discovered that are letting me get DVD-like progressive quality from most of my recordings.. done with stuff like vidomi or drdivx these files are deinterlaced poorly.. I guess it'd be nice to have the ability to export a show's details.. and then later import a show using the exported xml/txt file and then linking to the newly created divx |

Sage will stream any file type that plays back using DirectShow EXCEPT for WindowsMedia. They're the only one I know of that requires a custom file parser. Every other file format that WMP will play should play fine with Sage, even across a network.

WM9 is the only format I have been able to script for automatic recompression. But it's the only format you don't support.
Here's another vote for sup[porting WM9. Martin
