Latest Alpha mvp.bin and Still No Joy.....

Thank you all for your suggestions and help. I have tried numerous things tonight over the last couple hours, hoping that my earlier work and frustrations would eventually be rewarded.

Unfortunately, even with the new Alpha version of mvp.bin, my Intel NIC configured for every permutation of checksums on and off, full and half duplex, 10 Mb/sec (slow speed), 100 Mb/sec, the newest Java, the older Java, and a lot of network switch substitutions, absolutely nothing works.

In each and every case....the appication loads, then spends a little time trying to start, and then fails, briefly leaving a messed up screen and no Sage GUI. Then the MVP Extender always goes into a sequence of discovering the server using its' own GUI and runs correctly using the primitive MVP GUI. The DHCP client list always shows the correct MAC address for the MVP Extender box, leading me to believe that the mvp.bin application, ***including the newest Alpha version*** is still flawed.

I would be very inclined to use ethereal or whatever tools exist to help solve this problem for me and for others. How do I go about providing useful logs, data captures, etc.???

Again many thanks...

Larry

Forgot to ask.....

I forgot to ask....

If my firewall is entirely disabled, and I have no Quality of Service packet traffic enabled (for diagnostic or other purposes) is there still a need for me to be concerned about which ports need to be enabled? My understanding is that this port issue is only significant if a firewall is being used. Is this correct??

Thanks again,

Larry

I just wrote this up on the thread I started concerning my MVP issue:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...634#post132634

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the detailed directions. I installed both programs, modified the sage.properties file, captured about 2.5 MBytes of traffic, and have a log file called tv.sage.mod.0.log (is this the sage_log file you are referring to???)

I do not see any other recent log file in the %\sagetv\directory.

I will forward this to Sage experts, but am still not certain that the log is correct.

A little scanning of the roughly 7000 packets exchanged during the MVP startup sequence looks (to my untrained eyes) uneventful up until around the following unsuccesful DHCP assignment around Frame 6880. My MVP is at address xxx.116 and my SageTV server is at xxx.103

This looks okay. The progression should be as follows:
DHCP Discover
DHCP Offer
DHCP Request
DHCP ACK

From the above sequence it does look like you've progressed past my original problem already. Comparing to what you have below to what I get from my system it looks like you are using different ports than my mediaMVP to communicate with the server. What do you have displaying on your TV at this point?

I do not see any other recent log file in the %\sagetv\directory.

I will forward this to Sage experts, but am still not certain that the log is correct.

The debug line in the sage.properties file is case sensitive. So make sure your line is exactly like the one below:

debug_logging=TRUE

Thanks again,

QoS is also dependent on what ports are being used. It can do traffic shaping using L7protocols or based on the TCP/UDP ports being used. But if you have QoS disabled, then you have no need to worry about it.

Did you order 4 more since they are working now? But seriously, you guys with router problems, have you tried setting the MVP's static (in the 4.14 beta it mentions they support static on the MVP's now). Wonder if that might help?

The MVP finishes "Loading Application...", and then goes to "Starting Application..." which it does for a about 7 seconds seconds. Then the raster on the TV collapses, flickers, puts up a brief bright colored flash (this lasts for maybe 2 or 3 seconds), and then the MVP regains the display with the Hauppauge GUI appearing again (The display shows the MediaMVP and Hauppauge splash screen) and the bottom of this screen adisplays "Contacting Servers". Shortly thereafter, the Hauppauge "go" screen appears with choices for Video, Photo, Music, Radio, and Settings, and I can access the Sage server thru the Happauge interface.

I haven't tried a static IP for the MVP. Any idea how to set it up?

I believe that the static support is not actually hard-coding IP addresses into the MVP. It is allowing the SageTV client to ask the DHCP server for the same IP address for the MVP upon boot up. The MVP by itself doesn't have it's own IP address prior to loading the image. Most routers can do this already with "Static DHCP" settings that tie IP addresses to known MAC addresses.

It doesn't look like in this log capture that your MVP was found. here is what my log shows upon MVP discovery:

Do you still have the Hauppauge software installed? Completely unistall it and then try to communicate with the MVP. The boot process between the Hauppauge software and the imbedded SageTV client are very similar. Running both at the same time will cause problems. If you don't want to unistall it just yet you could disable the services under admin tools in your control panel.

Once Dvix is natively supported, and I have a stable MVP, THEN I'll order the three more!

Currently I am very happy with what it can do besides the above problems I am experiancing. Currently when I try to browse photos, my MVP locks up. When I reboot the MVP, it loads the Sage splash screen for a second then goes to black screen. I have to completely remove Sage on the server..including deleting the directory and reinstall 4.14 and the Alpha MVP.bin. I also run the IP Reg Optimizer. Then it all works again. The video capabilities work great, besides for the lack of the said Divx support.

MrApollinax....

You, sir, are *****A GENIUS*****!

I removed the Hauppauge software entirely (using Add/Remove Programs), rebotted everything, and my original problem is now *****SOLVED****!!!

I can't thank you enough for getting me fixed.

The Sage UI looks great. The playback is jerky, so I will need to tweak things, but I am now about 99% of the way there.

Many thanks again.

Larry

I'm glad you got your system up and running! Here's the link to the Hauppauge TCP/IP optimization reg tweak:

Hope that helps.

Well, if you are willing to venture there, I am using a 3rd party firmware from Sveasoft http://www.sveasoft.com

Which linksys routers do you have?
