It could also be the process of reinstalling the software fixed something too. Whatever it is I'm just glad I don't have to resort to reinstalling Windows.

I wonder if the ones with no problems are running something other than XP Pro. Quote:

Bottom line, if there is any product that stops working after a security patch is applied, then "in my opinion" it's the vendor's responsibility to update their product.
Of course that's a generic statement since we still apparently don't know for sure what the culprit is as far as Sage crashes are concerned. |

My system is Win XP home, and it is fully patched. I just backed up sage, uninstalled sage, uninstalled all versions of java, rebooted, installed sage 4.14 beta, copied my backup sage folder on top of the new install, and it has been working for 3 days. Sage had been crashing every few hours. Give it a try, it only takes 10 minutes.

Update to my issue: The downgrade to Java 1.5.4 did NOT work (glad it does for some of you though!), I got a crash a few hours later. :-/ Downgrading now to 1.4.2, hopeful it'll do the trick.
As far as this discussion on security & etc updates goes: It's definitely a catch 22. I must say that if it is the updates (Windows/Java/whatever), that this is the first time I've regretted updating; typically my luck has shown to reap benefits from upgrades in the form of stability etc (whether or not that includes a trade off for "new" bugs). Not so this time, that's for sure. I am quite likely to take the advice to not update anything further once I get back to stability, as things are clearly to the level of more harm than good now. I was pondering that XP has been out for, oh, 4 or 5 years now at least, and with all the security updates etc it's really not the same operating system at all any more. Yet every vendor writing software for it most likely started with the "original" XP years ago. Consider as well that many hardware vendors and products have come and gone in that time, leaving behind outdated drivers written for an old and essentially non-existant OS (in some respects). It really does leave things as rather a crap shoot, and no wonder our systems are starting to break. I'd hate to be a software developer trying to write (or patch) for such a moving target. Best of luck to us all!

OK, I guess I stand corrected, but I thought sure I tried to run it after my clean OS install and that it had complained about a missing JRE. Maybe that was the client. But it's also confusing because Sage's own site says that users need to download Java on their own and provides a link to the Sun site.
At any rate I agree - if Sage installs it's own Java then barring other issues it should work fine with that version - just be sure to disable auto-updates. |

I had the same problems with crashing and I will not use any version of JRE except Java 1.4.2_06.

A little googling found java v 1.4.2 - for those who wish to use the one that apparently came with Sage:
