I'm curious about how you're going to overcome the heat generated from all those procs and tuners. I have a PVR500 and a pair of vBox 151s in only 1 computer and it heats the office nicely.

Also, if we're in the same area, I'd love to offer my services in any capacity I can, Adam.
Yeah...like give us Placeshifter accounts...you know for stress testing

teknubic : I appreciate the offer but I am in Northern Virginia. Of course, if you are ever here on business, I would be happy to show you around the system. As far as heat goes, the server itself has an incredible (LOUD) cooling system. The PCI cards themselves will be housed in a PCI enclosure with its own cooling system - a 60mm fan I believe. I can always add a 120mm fan or two if need be though.

@Deadbolt : haha! You guys crack me up!

We don't have any datacenters in Virginia
Good luck with your massive build. It sure puts the hurt on SnapStreams Hydra.

@ dbfresh23 : Tell me about it! I really have wanted to put fiber in every room but that was getting a little costly. However, fiber is definetly going to be going in certain rooms like the data closets on each floor, the server room and my office (I do a lot of video conferencing) At this point in the design/construction phase of the house I can still make changes though so who knows.

@teknubic : Sorry to hear that, I would have certainly appreciated the help of a fellow SageTVer. Perhaps I may be out in your neck of the woods sometime and I can buy you a beer.

Hey Adam, my curiosity is piqued... please keep us updated on your progress!

BTW, once you get this whole thing going, you'll run a good chance of making the front page of /. !

IT HAS BEGUN!

I just got my shipment of D10 tuners from D* and activated all of them. For those of you that are curious, I chose the D10 because it has the most reliably supported command set over the low speed data port. So far I only have 10 but the whole point is to test out an encoder setup first and then replicate it. I am still waiting on my shipment from NewEgg (10 PVR-500 Encoders).

I may post some pics tonight.

Did you verify which version of the D10's you orderred and received?? I don't believe the D10-300's work with serial.

UPDATE: Well somewhat of an update, I ordered all the supplies that I need to create the serial cables to control the D10's

Total of 200 RJ11 crimpable handset plugs (Link) and 60 RJ45 to Serial Adapters (Link). I will make up some cables this weekend (assuming my package is here) to try everything out.

These parts will allow me to control my D* D10-100 recievers through my AccelePort xP multi-port serial card.

Just out of curiosity... was there a particular reason you opted for SD DirecTV receivers rather than HD-only? There are a few models that are serial-controllable.

I will be using 40 tuners that are analog only and using a couple R5000's to capture HD from D*. Remember, the only way to get digital off of the HD box is to go with the 169time or R5000 solution and those boxes cost upwards of $700 a piece. Multiply that by the 40+ tuners that this install is going to be supporting and its not going to be a pretty picture for my wallet

Wouldn't your money really be better spent on a therapist to determine why you need to watch so much tv?

Is that 40 analog DirecTV set-top boxes or some combination of boxes and onboard cable tuners on the capture cards? It seems like if you are using the HD satellite capture devices to simultaneously tune a two-hour movie on HBO-HD and a three-hour football game on ESPN-HD then you'd only have one available tuner for any of the clients that would like to tune any other HD satellite programming during that two- to three- hour block.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with your proposed setup, but the 40:3 ratio seems rather limiting for such an elaborate setup.

The way I have this initially specced out is as follows :

* Provisions for at least 40 Analog Tuners
* Provisions for at least 10 OTA HD Tuners
* Provisions for at least 3 SAT HD Tuners

Now, I totally understand what you are saying about HD content but in all honesty my wife and I don't watch that many HD programs on the satellite connection. Most of our HD watching is on OTA channels. However, I should mention that this system has room for expansion built in, especially for satellite HD broadcasts -- the network encoder for the satellite streams will only be encoding 3 HD programs at once and that is from 3 R5000's. I'd like to test this out a little bit before I jump in head first and see how the R5000's work and how reliable they are. Reading in the R5000 thread, there are some very mixed reactions to the device.

So, what did the power sub station cost to run all this? 500 Watt power supply x 30 computers ~15kw. And I feel guilty leaving my Athlon on 24x7.

I do have a dedicated 5 ton Libert unit specced out to go into my server room

As far as the power cost, I dont know yet because the house is still being constructed...
