Encoding hi-def to H.264 is a painful process, believe me I know. However its many times more compressed than MPEG2.
I read the HDMI card comes with encoding software that is real time, MJPEG. Files will be larger than MPGE2 though. I dont know what kind of compatibility it has however. Also I tried out Elecards MPEG2 encoders. They promise real time conversion. Theres a STD version and a PRO version. The STD version is $150 bucks, but doesnt do HD, only up to 720x576. The PRO version does, but there is no price listed (which means its a bunch). I briefly tested it on Sunday (between football games); the results were promising, after I realized that the generic decoder I was using took up over 30% of my resources, for 720p. NVIDIA uses around 10%. |

Oh, a question for anyone who is an expert in graphedit:
I managed to save a dump file (one video and one audio), I assume it was the raw unencoded video (500 MB file after just a few seconds), however I could not figure out how to import it to graphedit. That would seem like a more real way to test an encoder. Anyone know how to import a dumped file? A last note, this is almost becoming an academic quest. Anyone expecting to pop this card in their PC and have Sage recording is probably in for a bad suprise (first off theres HDCP to overcome). |
