UNC paths is just a fancy name for network paths. I see Greg explained it well above, but basically its;

\\pcname\share\optionalpath

Ok, so I really only use the extender. I used 'Placeshifter' because (I believe) that the behavior is the same using the extender vs using a placeshifter on a PC.
Yup.

Most on these boards don't seem to have a lot of extender experience so I wanted to reference something equivilent.
I think there's a lot more than you'd guess, but I suspect most don't have many comments about it

I am trying to find out if it is possible for the extenders to access media that is not physically on the same machine as the server without requiring the stream to flow through the server machine.
Short answer, no, everything the Extender plays is streamed from the server.

It sounds like if instead of a placeshifter extender, I used a HTPC running the client software, that it may do what I want.
Yes, that should do what you want.

Of course, in my setup, there is no need for transcoding, which is why I was blind to the need for the stream to go through the server in the first place.

I think I am understanding, now. Unless there is a 'mini' or 'child' server (software doesn't exist) running on the recorder machines, any stream destined for an extender or placeshifter will have to pass through the server.
In a nutshell, yes.

I guess that's what I was asking. If there was any way that they might be able to access the recorders directly
Not really, in fact there's no way really for you to access them directly anyway. Sage automatically chooses tuners/recorders for you, based on their capabilities and mysterious internal logic.

FWIW, I wouldn't worry about the streaming, it's really trivial, we're talking < 10Mbps, so even if you've only got a 100Mbps network, you'd have to get close to 10 simultaneous streams before you start running into problems. WIth 1000Mbps, you're talking more like 100 streams.

thanks for straightening me out. I'm not concerned with the bandwidth. GE switches are getting cheap and I already have a GE NIC in my server PC. It's more the server CPU/Windows/etc that concerns me. Hopefully, I will soon have a PC that I can dedicate to this task - preferably Linux.
