This is changed through the regedit only? I'm not using the beta, I'm using 6.4.8.

Edit: Changed it in the registry to 200 (512 decimal) and don't see a change. used/total in sagemce shows 165/198.

If you're only seeing two figures you aren't seeing the maximum. Are you using the default STV?

No, I'm using the SAGEMCE interface. I'll try to go back to the default stv to see it.

Can the info be found anywhere else like the .properties file?

If it did, you wouldn't have to change it in the registry!

Does changing the Java heap size to 200 (512mb) have any effect on performance when using SageTV as a server with HD200 clients?

Rarely, my HD200s will pause for a second while going through the recorded TV list (a wheel spins). Would changing the Java heap size help with the issue?

Thanks,
Will

yes and yes... especially if you are running addins that take advantage of fanart (sagemc, smw, tve, etc)

That's interesting. I thought that increasing the Java Heap Size was only beneficial if the SageTV was also being used as the display ( SagetTV & SagetTVserver ).

I have two HD200 as well. My PVR runs SageTV Server only, the HD200's are used for displaying content.

So do the HD200's do the graphical rendering work or is that SageTV server doing the work?

AFAIK, the server does the UI rendering (that's why you hear the menu navigation sounds on the server (sagemc) and not at the tv/hd200).

Absolutely not. My server is headless, but increasing heap made a huge difference for me.

Cool.

What is a good number?

I have mine set to 710MB. Looking at SageTV system information, I see:

JVM Heap Size (Used/Total/Max): 180MB / 185MB / 710MB.

So mine may be an overkill? I have 2GB memory.

MY Java stack usage is often up around 900 MB.

I have jvmmaxheapsize set to 1024. I just tried to set it higher and if I do Sage won't start?? Running at 90% utilization seems high so I'd like to turn up the max.

Anyone know how high you can set it and still have Sage start and run okay?

I'm using XP 32 bit with latest Sage 7. Running Java 6 update 23. Bopx has 4 gigs of memory but being xp 32 only shows 3.4 gigs available.

Thanks

Good question. I have observed the same 1024 is max.

Not sure why... as java heap can certainly be larger.

But SageTV not starting with it larger...

I have just encountered another OoM today. I am upgrading my JVM and setting up VisualVM to see if I can figure out something.

I started having Java Heap problems with ver. 7. No matter what I set it to it would eventually reach the max and Sage would crash after several days. I finally gave up and have the Sage server reboot via a script every night at 4:30am. No more proplems. As an added bonus sporatic problems with my HDPVR's have been eliminated.

Would you mind sharing that script?

No need for a script - put in a scheduled task (using the wizard) to invoke the "shutdown" command with the reboot option:

Did anyone ever figure out why the Java Heap Size cannot be increased past 1024?

The 32-bit JVM maximum heap size (-Xmx) is limited to a maximum of 1.5 Gb and it requires contiguous heap space.

I'm getting Java Heap errors about every day also. No time to investigate/debug so I just made a quick dirty .bat file:
net stop "SageTV"
net start "SageTV"

and run it daily at 03:00 in the morning for the time being.

No need for a full reboot to clear the Java Heap. A simple restart of the SageTV service is enough.

Eric
