OpenGL / XV / OSD flipping - Any one with XV working?

Before I give up on Linux miniclient, does any one have XV working? I've tried on ATI as well as Nvidia drivers. XV works fine except for the OSD/video flipping issues mentioned in other threads. The standard suggestion seems to be to enable opengl. However, the video quality is very poor (at least on my hardware) with OpenGL.

Can someone from sage please comment on what is causing the flipping when XV is used? BTW, mplayer works fine (even with its OSD) with XV. So, it must be something specific to Sage or its specific version of mplayer.

This is really frustrating and I've spent a number of hours trying to get this to work. At this point I might as well wait for the HD extender to come back in stock and give up on running miniclient on the se rver.

Pleae help!

Here is a message I just sent to Sage support in case any one can confirm or add to the findings.

----------------

1. ATI proprietary driver (fglrx) does NOT work with SageTV when OpenGL is used/needed. XV/Overlay works great, but the OSD/Video flips back and forth. If that flipping is fixed, then XV is probably the best video quality.

2. ATI open source driver works with opengl but not with XV. However, CPU utilization shoots up (probably because HW acceleration is not working 100% in open source).

3. Tried an Nvidia card instead using their proprietery driver. Both OpenGL and XV work. XV is much smoother and lower CPU. OpenGL is some what jerky with higher CPU usage. But the OSD/video flipping still exists with XV.

4. Just to eliminate any possibilities, I've tried playing a mpg file sage recorded with mplayer and XV. Everything is perfect including mplayer's OSD.

From the above, it appears that there is a problem with sage using XV. I don't know if any one is using XV successfully. I've posted a message on the forums asking the same question. I'd rather NOT use opengl if I can help it due to the poor video quality (at least another person posted the same thing). Actually, I'd rather use XVMC. Again, XVMC works with mplayer on my system.

Is it possible to change the "command line" sage is using to call mplayer using a property? I'd like try different things including xvmc to narrow down the problem.

Thanks
Sarat.
